how to apply olive oil on hair - #38017

Connor

I am really struggling with my hair lately, like it feels super dry and kinda lifeless. I've heard a lot about how to apply olive oil on hair, and I wanna give it a shot, but honestly, I'm kinda clueless about the whole process. I tried regular conditioners, but they don’t seem to do much for me. A friend suggested using olive oil since it's more natural, but I don't know if I'm doing it right. So, I got this extra virgin olive oil, but when I tried putting it on my hair, it just kinda sat there, and then I ended up with grease everywhere! I read somewhere that olive oil can help with shine and moisture, but how to apply olive oil on hair without making a huge mess? Should I warm it up first? What’s the right amount to use? Also, I've seen tips saying to leave it on for hours or even overnight, but is that necessary? Sometimes I wonder if I'm just overthinking it… I feel like I gotta get it together 'cause my hair is really lackluster right now. I don’t wanna feel like I wasted more time and money on something that doesn’t work. Can any body give me some solid tips on how to apply olive oil on hair without turning it into a slippery disaster? Thanks!

Applying olive oil to the hair can indeed offer shine and moisture, but it’s important to apply it appropriately to avoid the greasy situation you’ve encountered. Olive oil is a heavy oil, and a little goes a long way. First, measure about 1 to 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil; this quantity generally suffices for medium-length hair. If you’re dealing with significantly long or thick hair, you might need more, but always start small.

Before application, warming it slightly can aid absorption. You can do this by placing the oil in a bowl, then submerge it in a larger bowl of hot water for a few minutes to gently warm it. Make sure the oil isn’t too hot to touch, as comfort is essential.

Start by sectioning your dry (not wet) hair into manageable parts. Gently massage the oil into your scalp, then work it down through the length of your strands using your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to distribute it evenly. This technique ensures the oil penetrates the hair shaft without leaving excess at the roots.

Leaving it in your hair is flexible. You can allow it to sit for about 30 minutes to an hour, which is generally adequate. If your hair is particularly dry or damaged, longer durations or even overnight treatments can be beneficial. When opting for overnight, consider using a shower cap or wrapping your hair in a towel to prevent the oil from transferring to your bedding.

When it’s time to wash it out, apply shampoo before adding water, working it thoroughly into your scalp. This breaks down the oil. Follow with a good rinse and repeat if needed. Ensure all oil residues are removed to avoid leaving hair feeling oily.

While olive oil is nourishing, factors such as your diet and daily care affect your overall hair health. Balance your dosha with a diet rich in seasonal fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. Limited processed foods and maintaining hydration supports your hair’s natural vibrance. Regular trims and avoiding harsh chemical treatments also assist in maintaining healthy hair. By integrating these practices with olive oil treatments, you can work towards reviving your hair’s vitality.
