can ashwagandha cause hair loss - #38228

Emma

I am really confused right now because I started taking ashwagandha a few months ago for stress and energy. At first, it felt like a miracle! My anxiety levels were down, and I was sleeping better. But around the same time, I've noticed more hair in my brush every morning?? Like, could ashwagandha cause hair loss?! I mean, I read about all these benefits, and I didn't think hair loss could be one of them. I thought it was supposed to help with overall health, right? Also, I changed my diet up a bit, added some other herbs, and I'm just not sure if it's a combo thing. Maybe I messed something up in my routine. My scalp feels a tad itchy too, and I'm not sure if that's linked to the ashwagandha or just dryness this time of year. I did tell my doc about the hair loss, but all they said was that it could be stress causing it, which made me even more stressed... ugh! Has anyone else had this issue? Can ashwagandha cause hair loss, or is it something else? Like, how can I figure this out? I want to keep using it because it’s worked wonders for my energy... but not if it means I’m gonna end up bald! Any advice or like, personal experiences??

Doctors' responses

Ashwagandha is primarily known for reducing stress and supporting energy levels, but it is not commonly associated with hair loss. In Ayurveda, hair health connects closely with the balance of doshas, especially Vata and Pitta. Excessive Pitta can lead to hair and scalp issues like hair loss and itching. Ashwagandha, possessing cooling properties, typically balances Pitta, suggesting it should not be an immediate suspect for your symptoms.

However, each person’s reaction to a herb like Ashwagandha can vary – bio-individuality is important. Perhaps, you are experiencing a unique sensitivity or response. Hair fall and itchy scalp could result from various factors including dietary changes, seasonal shifts, stress, or another herbal interaction. Consider these too.

Examine your diet; make sure you’re getting adequate nutrients essential for hair health, like iron, zinc, and biotin. Foods rich in omega-3s and proteins should be part of your daily intake. Seasonal dryness can irritate the scalp, so ensuring hydration and possibly incorporating a mild, natural scalp oil can help. An oil massage, done once or twice weekly, could provide moisture and ease itchiness.

If you’ve started other herbs alongside Ashwagandha, look into their effects individually. Tracking any patterns in symptoms will also help identify a specific cause. Stopping Ashwagandha temporarily, then gradually reintroducing it, could test if it’s indeed the trigger.

Importantly, since this is concerning and your doctor mentioned stress, managing stress through yoga or meditation could support overall health. If the hair loss continues, consult an Ayurvedic specialist to balance your doshas more effectively, and perhaps reevaluate your regimen. Keep monitoring and trust in the process.
