can we apply curd on oiled hair - #38641

Audrey

I am really confused about my hair care routine lately. Just a few weeks ago, I started oiling my hair because it was feeling super dry and frizzy... but now I keep wondering, can we apply curd on oiled hair? Like, I’ve heard mixed opinions. Last Sunday, I washed my hair after letting the oil sit for a couple of days, and I thought a curd mask could help with the nourishment. But then I was like, wait, is that okay if there’s still oil in it? My hair has sooo many split ends and I really want it to be healthy again. Curd is supposed to be good for the hair, right? 🤷‍♀️ I tried applying curd right after oiling once but felt like it just made my hair greasy. But then again, I see people in videos mixing curd and oil for hair packs, and I’m like is that a good thing? Or am I just overthinking? Should I do the oiling first and then the curd later? Or like... are they completely incompatible? Just hoping to get my hair to look shiny and alive! 🤞 Please help, I've been feeling kinda lost.

You can absolutely apply curd on oiled hair. The combination of oil and curd can be quite beneficial for your hair, although it can feel a bit greasy if not washed out thoroughly. Curd is well-regarded in Ayurveda for its nutritional value, providing proteins and enzymes that hydrate and smooth the hair, which can be especially helpful for treating dry and frizzy hair like yours.

However, when it comes to application, if you’re finding that applying curd right after oiling leaves your hair feeling too greasy, you might want to tweak your routine a bit. Here’s a simple approach: first, apply oil to your hair and scalp to nourish and improve circulation. Coconut or sesame oil are considered particularly beneficial in Ayurvedic traditions. Let the oil sit for a couple of hours or overnight to deeply penetrate the hair shafts.

After oiling, you can apply curd as a mask. Mix it with a bit of lemon juice if your scalp tends to be oily, or with honey if you have more dryness. Apply it evenly from roots to tips and leave it on for about 30 minutes. This approach allows the curd to act as a natural conditioner, helping to seal in the hair’s moisture and enhance its shine.

Don’t forget to thoroughly rinse out the curd and oil. Using a mild, sulfate-free shampoo twice can help remove any excess oil or curd residue.

Regarding your concern about split ends—apart from regular trims—consider incorporating more nourishing foods like seeds, nuts, green leafy vegetables and adequate water intake to support your hair health from within. Also, avoid over-styling or excessive heat treatments to your hair.

Remember that everyone’s hair responds differently, so monitoring how your hair feels after each application is key. If it continues to feel greasy, you might try reversing the order or adjusting the amount or type of oil used based on how your hair feels.

Applying curd on oiled hair is generally fine, but it’s understandable to feel unsure with mixed opinions around. In Ayurveda, curd is considered a natural conditioner, rich in nutrients and beneficial for nurturing dry hair as it cools the scalp. If your hair tends to feel greasy with the combination, you might want to adjust how you apply these treatments. Since your hair feels dry and has split ends, integrating both oil and curd can indeed help nourish and hydrate it.

You can apply curd and oil separately to get the best benefits. Begin by oiling your hair thoroughly. Choose a suitable oil like coconut or sesame, which are both nourishing and can deeply penetrate the hair shaft. Let the oil sit for a few hours or overnight to allow full absorption. This process will help with scalp health and dryness.

When you’re ready to wash, you can then apply the curd. Use fresh, homemade, or organic curd rather than pre-packaged ones. Apply curd all over your hair, especially concentrating on the ends where split ends occur most. Leave the curd in your hair for 20–30 minutes before washing it out with a natural, gentle shampoo. This will help to remove both the curd and the excess oil, leaving your hair soft and less frizzy without excessive greasiness.

It’s generally better to avoid mixing them before application if you’re concerned about greasiness. Some people mix curd with a small amount of oil for a mask, but if it hasn’t worked for you, it’s entirely okay to keep them separate. Ensure your routine aligns with your dosha and try to remain consistent; with time and patience, this simple Ayurvedic routine can help bring your hair back to life. If you continue to experience issues, consider consulting with an Ayurvedic practitioner to customize your routine according to your specific hair type and condition.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
