can i use multani mitti daily - #38839

Emma

I am dealing with some really annoying skin issues lately and kinda desperate for a solution. Always had some oily skin, but now I feel like it’s way worse. Was doing some research and came across this stuff called multani mitti. I heard it's super good for oily skin and helps with acne too. I've used it a couple of times in a week and wow, my skin feels like a dream afterwards! But, can I use multani mitti daily? Like, I’m kinda worried about overdoing it, you know? I mean, I don’t want to dry my skin out or cause some weird reactions. I read it’s natural and all, but still I’m a bit confused. Also, is it okay to mix it with other things, like rosewater or yogurt? I've done that, and it feels nice, but do you guys think I should stick to just plain multani mitti? Like, what do you think is the best way to use it for my oily skin without messing things up? I just want to get rid of all the shine and breakouts without turning my face into a desert, haha! Any advice would be super helpful. Thanks!

Doctors' responses

Using multani mitti (also known as Fuller’s Earth) is indeed beneficial for oily skin, as it helps absorb excess oil and can aid in reducing acne. However, multani mitti can be quite drying if used too frequently. Using it daily may strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to imbalances and potentially triggering more oil production or irritation. For oily skin, 2 to 3 times a week is usually sufficient.

Mixing multani mitti with other ingredients like rosewater or yogurt can help in balancing its drying effects. Rosewater is cooling and soothing, suitable for maintaining skin hydration. Yogurt, rich in lactic acid, can add moisture and softness while also mildly exfoliating your skin. Both of these are good to mix with multani mitti, making the treatment more gentle. Applying a paste of multani mitti with rosewater or yogurt, leaving it on until it almost dry but not entirely, then washing off with lukewarm water can help maintain the balance.

For best results, consider using it in the evening since that’s when skin can be more receptive to treatments. Afterward, follow up with a light, non-comedogenic moisturizer to keep the balance.

If you’re dealing with persistent breakouts or excessive oiliness, you might be experiencing a dosha imbalance, possibly an excess of Pitta or Kapha. In addition to topical treatments, dietary and lifestyle modifications according to your dosha can be beneficial. Favoring cooling foods, staying hydrated, and reducing fried or overly spicy foods may help too.

Should you notice increased dryness, irritation, or any other adverse reactions, reduce the frequency of application or consult with a professional Ayurvedic practitioner for tailored advice. Make sure to monitor your skin’s response carefully whenever introducing new products or routines.

Using multani mitti, also known as Fuller’s Earth, can indeed be very beneficial for managing oily skin and acne because it has a great capacity to absorb excess oil and impurities from your skin. However, using it daily might not be ideal. Multani mitti is quite drying, and while it effectively reduces oiliness, it can also strip your skin of natural oils if used too frequently, leading to dryness and possible irritation.

A more balanced approach might be applying it 2-3 times a week. This frequency will help you control the oil and keep breakouts in check without upsetting your skin’s balance too much. Given your concerns about over-drying, it’s important to observe how your skin reacts after each use. If you notice any signs of dryness or tightness, consider reducing the frequency and ensure to moisturize after use.

Mixing multani mitti with rosewater or yogurt can also be beneficial. Rosewater has soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, making it a good choice for balancing the drying effects of multani mitti. Similarly, yogurt is nourishing and can provide a slight moisturizing effect, which helps to maintain hydration while you detoxify your skin. You could try mixing multani mitti with rosewater for a refreshing mask or with yogurt if you prefer a creamier consistency.

Remember to be gentle with your skin; applying these masks should feel soothing, not harsh. Patch testing on a small area before applying to your entire face is always a safe practice to ensure your skin responds well to the mixture. These steps should help you manage oiliness and breakouts effectively, holding on to that balance of clear, but not overly dry, skin.
