how to apply yogurt on hair - #39048

Victoria

I am struggling with my hair lately, and I’m wondering how to apply yogurt on hair for some much-needed nourishment. My hair has been feeling super dry and brittle, and I read that yogurt might help. I’ve tried a few different oils, but they don’t seem to be cutting it, ya know? A friend mentioned using yogurt and said it made her hair shinier and softer. Honestly, I’m kind of clueless about how to apply yogurt on hair properly. Like, do I just slather it on straight from the fridge? And how long should I leave it in? I’ve seen some folks say to mix it with honey or some oils for extra benefits, but that sounds like a lot of work. Also, I’m worried about how it might smell afterward! I can’t afford to walk around smelling like a fridge! 😅 I just wanna know if it really works, and if it does, how to apply yogurt on hair without making a huge mess everywhere. Is there a specific routine I should follow for the best results? Thanks for any tips you could share – I’m ready to give this a go!

Applying yogurt to your hair can indeed provide the nourishment your dry, brittle hair needs. According to Ayurveda, yogurt (or dahi) is rich in nutrients and acts as a natural conditioner for the hair, owing to its cooling and hydrating properties. When applied correctly, it can restore moisture, add shine, and soften your hair considerably.

To apply yogurt to your hair, start by using plain, unflavoured yogurt. Avoid any with sugars or added ingredients. If your hair is particularly dry, you might consider mixing yogurt with honey, as honey can further enhance moisture retention, although this part is optional. For a basic application, gently massage about half a cup of yogurt directly onto your scalp and throughout your hair. Focus on covering all areas evenly.

Leave the yogurt in your hair for about 20 to 30 minutes. This allows adequate time for the nutrients to penetrate the hair shaft and for the moisturizing properties to take effect. While you might be concerned about the smell, a good rinse should suffice. Afterward, wash your hair thoroughly with a mild shampoo, preferably with natural ingredients and then rinse off with cool water. This should help alleviate any yogurt scent.

For an enhanced effect, you could add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the yogurt prior to application. Essential oils like lavender or jasmine can mask any lingering odor, while also providing additional benefits like improving hair strength and adding fragrance.

As for frequency, apply this yogurt treatment once a week to start. If you notice improvement, continue at this interval, adjusting as necessary according to the needs of your hair. Keep in mind that consistency can make a big difference in achieving the desired outcome.

If your dryness persists despite using yogurt treatments, consider other factors like diet and hydration levels, as these too play a critical role in hair health. Consult an Ayurvedic professional if your condition doesn’t improve, as they can provide personalized guidance based on your specific dosha balance and prakriti.
