what are the benefits of aloe vera - #39252

Brooklyn

I am really curious about aloe vera because I've been having some skin issues lately. A couple of weeks ago, I got this weird rash on my arm after hiking, just like out of nowhere! I tried all kinds of over-the-counter creams to soothe it, but nothing seems to work. A friend told me that aloe vera might be good for it, and now I’m wondering, what are the benefits of aloe vera? I’ve heard people rave about how it can help with burns and cuts, but what about like, general skin irritations like mine? Also, I read somewhere that aloe vera can help with hydration — is that true? Because my skin feels super dry and rough, even though I’ve been drinking a lot of water! Oh, and turmeric powder has been floating around as a possible solution too, but I don't know how to combine that with aloe vera, if at all. Will it make a difference? What are the benefits of aloe vera in that case? If anyone has tried it, I'd love to hear how it went and what you did! I really want to avoid a trip to the dermatologist if possible. Anything you guys recommend on using aloe vera topically? I hope I can clear this up soon!

Doctors' responses

Aloe vera is certainly intriguing when it comes to skin care concerns. From an Ayurvedic perspective, aloe vera is known as “Kumari” and is appreciated for its soothing and calming properties, especially helpful for skin issues like rashes and dryness you’re experiencing. First, addressing your rash - aloe vera’s gel-like substance is cooling and anti-inflammatory, making it ideal for soothing irritated skin. Applying fresh aloe vera gel directly from the plant to your rash can provide relief. Do this twice a day to help reduce inflammation and promote healing. Always test a small spot beforehand to check for any sensitivity.

Now, regarding overall skin hydration, yes, aloe vera can help. The gel contains compounds that retain moisture, so regularly applying it can assist in keeping your skin hydrated and improving rough textures. This might compensate for skin dryness despite your hydration efforts via water intake.

As for combining turmeric with aloe vera, turmeric is another excellent Ayurvedic herb with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Combining turmeric with aloe vera can be beneficial. Mix a small amount of turmeric powder with fresh aloe vera gel and apply it as a paste to the affected area. Let it sit for about 15-20 minutes before rinsing it off with lukewarm water. Be cautious with turmeric, as it can stain the skin yellow temporarily, so use it sparingly.

These methods might not replace professional medical advice if symptoms persist or worsen. Ensure your diet supports the healing process by including hydrating foods, and maintain regular hygiene with mild, non-irritating products. Also avoid potential allergens or irritants that can exacerbate your condition. Stay consistent with these remedies for a period and observe your skin’s response, but don’t hesitate to contact a dermatologist if the situation doesn’t improve or worsens – your skin health is a priority.
