how to remove dark area around lips - #39455

Sofia

I am struggling with this dark area around my lips and honestly, it's kinda stressing me out. I first noticed it about a few months ago, and at first I thought maybe it was just dryness or my skincare routine or something. I tried moisturizing and topping it with a balm but that just seemed to make it worse! The area doesn't hurt or anything, but it looks off and I've been trying to figure out how to remove dark area around lips naturally, you know? I went to my regular doc, and they suggested it might be hyperpigmentation, but they didn’t have many suggestions for natural remedies, which is what I'm really after. I’ve read that things like turmeric or coconut oil could be helpful, but I have no clue how to incorporate them into my routine effectively. Also, I feel like I might be making it worse by worrying about it, like am I just stressing my skin out more? Have any of you experienced this? I am just looking for some tips on how to remove dark area around lips without harsh chemicals or treatments. Maybe some lifestyle changes or natural remedies? Or even just your personal experiences would help. Thanks in advance!

Doctors' responses

Hyperpigmentation around the lips can indeed feel like an overwhelming concern, but there are gentle, natural remedies based on Ayurvedic principles that may provide relief. According to Ayurveda, pigmentation issues often arise from imbalance in the Pitta dosha, which governs heat and metabolism in the body. Addressing this can involve dietary, lifestyle changes, as well as topical treatments for the skin.

Firstly, start by hydrating yourself adequately as dehydration can exacerbate skin concerns. Aim for at least 2-3 liters of room temperature water daily. Introducing a diet that cools the Pitta dosha can be beneficial: include foods such as cucumber, mint, melons, and other cucurbits as they have high water content and cooling properties. Avoid excessive spices, sour, and salty foods, as they may aggravate the Pitta.

For external application, turmeric, with its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, can be a useful natural remedy. Mix a pinch of turmeric powder with a few drops of water or lemon juice, and apply it gently around the dark area. Leave it on for about 10 minutes before rinsing off with lukewarm water. However, be cautious with lemon juice as it might be sensitive to some skin types, a patch test first can be helpful.

Coconut oil can also serve as a beneficial moisturizer. Gently massage a small amount into the lips and the surrounding area, leaving it overnight if possible. This will help in hydrating the skin and evening out skin tone over time.

Managing stress is equally important, since stress can worsen skin conditions. Incorporate calming activities such as yoga, meditation, or pranayama to maintain inner peace. Abhyanga, an Ayurvedic self-massage with warm sesame oil, can also be a relaxing ritual that helps balance the doshas.

Remember to protect your lips from sun exposure using a natural-based lip balm with SPF, as UV rays can intensify pigmentation.

These remedies require consistency, and since they are natural, they may take some time to exhibit noticeable changes. Patience and regular care can gradually lead to improvement in the pigmentation around your lips, but if the problem persists or worsens, consult with an experienced Ayurvedic practitioner or dermatologist for further personalized guidance.
