Doctors' responses
Persistent nail fungal infections can indeed be frustrating, especially when exacerbated by prolonged exposure to moisture. In Ayurveda, fungal infections are often related to imbalances in the Kapha and Pitta doshas and a weakened immune system. Focusing on balancing these doshas and improving immune function can be helpful. Here are some Ayurvedic recommendations you might consider:
- Dietary Changes: Incorporate more Kapha and Pitta-pacifying foods into your diet. This means including freshly cooked vegetables, whole grains, and legumes, while avoiding excessive dairy products, sweets, and fried or oily foods. Such foods tend to aggravate Kapha and can create excess moisture that supports fungal growth.
- Herbal Remedies: Consider applying neem oil to the affected nails. Neem has potent antifungal and antibacterial properties. Apply it directly to your nails after bathing when they are clean and dry. Turmeric paste can also be applied due to its antifungal capabilities. Mix turmeric powder with a little water to make a paste and apply it on the affected area for about 20-30 minutes before washing it off.
- Lifestyle Adjustments: Since you’ve noticed an aggravation with water exposure, minimize contact with water as much as possible. Use gloves when washing dishes or handling water for prolonged periods.
- Nail Hygiene: Keep your nails trimmed and clean. Ensure they are dry as much as possible. You might use an alcohol-based sanitizer on nails after drying your hands, as it can wick away any moisture that may linger.
- Supplement: Triphala churna can be consumed, around ½ a teaspoon with warm water before bed. It helps detoxify the body and enhance immunity, supporting your body’s fight against fungal infections.
- Professional Consult: Continue following up with your healthcare provider or an Ayurvedic practitioner, ensuring that your treatment is tailored and safe, especially since there could be co-existing conditions needing consideration.
By integrating these approaches with the ongoing allopathic treatment, you might better manage the fingal infection.
