is yogurt good for eczema - #40645

Caroline

I am really struggling with eczema, like it's been super frustrating. Lately, I’ve tried a ton of different creams and lotions, but nothing seems to really help. My skin gets itchy and dry, and sometimes it even gets all red and swollen. I recently heard that is yogurt good for eczema, so I gave it a shot. I started eating some plain yogurt daily and even put it on my skin sometimes, which felt kinda nice at first, but I’m not sure if it’s actually doing anything. Plus, I’ve read mixed reviews online. Some people swear by yogurt, claiming it really helps soothe their skin, while others say it made no difference at all. Like, am I wasting my time?? I really want to do everything I can to manage this eczema, but it's hard to know what's actually effective. Does anyone have experience with this? Specifically, is yogurt good for eczema or should I look for other solutions? Should I be concerned if I’m putting it on my skin and then it's kind of sticky too? Would love to hear your thoughts! Thanks a bunch!

Yogurt has indeed been a popular choice for many looking to manage symptoms of eczema, but it’s impact can vary from person to person. From an Ayurvedic perspective, yogurt is considered generally nourishing and can be beneficial for certain people, but it’s not universally recommended for skin conditions like eczema. A lot depends on your unique dosha balance.

Eczema often relates to an imbalance in the Pitta and Kapha doshas or when the skin (one of the dhatus) is not adequately nourished and hydrated. Yogurt, by its nature, increases Kapha and slightly Pitta, which might contribute to cooling and soothing in some cases. But for those with high Kapha or Pitta, yogurt might aggravate symptoms rather than alleviate them. Plain yogurt, particularly homemade, can be more balancing due to its probiotics, which promote gut health, potentially beneficial in managing skin health from within.

When applying yogurt topically, it might provide temporary relief because its lactic acid and cooling nature can soothe the skin. However, if you notice increased irritation or stickiness, it was best to stop. As for consumption, observe if it suits your digestive system; having it during the daytime with spices like turmeric or a little honey can enhance its balances effects.

Consider other dietary and lifestyle changes like avoiding spicy or very oily foods, managing stress, and keeping your routine regular to aid digestion. Start focusing on seasonal, fresh foods for your constitution, with properly cooked vegetables, and consume plenty of water to improve hydration and detoxification.

For safe practices, consult an Ayurvedic physician to assess your unique Prakriti (constitution) to help design a lifestyle and dietary plan that best addresses your eczema. Immediate skin flare-ups may also require you to seek additional soothing treatments, like applying coconut oil, which is less likely to irritate.

Remember that managing eczema often requires a multi-faceted approach, and what works for one may not work for another.
