which oil is best for hair - #40899

Scarlett

I am feeling super frustrated with my hair lately. It’s been so dry and brittle, and no matter what I do, I can’t seem to get it back to being healthy. A while ago, I read some stuff about how using different oils can help, but there are like sooo many choices out there. I keep asking myself, which oil is best for hair? I tried coconut oil for a bit; it smells nice, but my hair still feels rough and not shiny at all. Then I switched to argan oil, thinking maybe that’d help, but honestly, I’m not sure if it’s doing anything. I even went to a store and got some jojoba oil, which people rave about, but I didn't see much improvement either. It’s kind of embarrassing because my friends keep saying I should embrace it but I just want it to look and feel good again. Like, am I using the wrong oil? Is there a specific one that's known for really transforming hair health? Which oil is best for hair if you've got color-treated, kinda wavy hair like mine? Help! I’m ready to try anything at this point.

Doctors' responses

When dealing with dry and brittle hair, particularly when it’s color-treated and wavy, it’s crucial to understand that choosing the right oil involves considering both your hair type and your prakriti, or unique constitution. Ayurveda offers a holistic approach, and incorporating these principles can be quite effective.

For your case, sesame oil (Til Taila) is a great option. It’s known in Ayurveda for its deep-penetrating, nourishing qualities, making suitable for dry and brittle hair types. It also helps balance Vata dosha, which might be contributing to the dryness. Apply sesame oil warm once a week. Gently massage it into the scalp and along the length of the hair. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes to an hour. You can also cover your hair with a warm towel, which enhances absorption.

Another effective choice is amla oil (Indian gooseberry oil), particularly useful for hair that’s undergone coloring treatments. Amla oil helps strengthen the hair shaft while enhancing your natural shine, addressing those brittle hair concerns. Use it twice a week, like an overnight treatment, wash out thoroughly in the morning.

Bhringraj oil also deserves mention here, known in Ayurveda as the “King of Hair.” It can promote hair strength and reduce brittleness. Use it as needed, similar to other oils - warm the oil gently, massage it into your scalp, and leave it for at least 30 minutes before washing it out.

Avoid applying too much oil as it can sometimes weigh wavy hair down, leading to a greasy appearance rather than renewing vitality. Consider your diet as well - include foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, like flaxseeds or walnuts, to support hair health from the inside out. Also, routine yoga or meditation can help the body manage stress, another contributor to hair health concerns.

Finding the right oil might take some patience and experimentation. But with Ayurvedic principles tailored to your specific needs, you’ll likely find an option that restores luster and strength to your hair.
