which shampoo is best for hair growth and thickness - #41487

Mia

I am really struggling with my hair lately. Since a few months ago, I noticed it started thinning out and falling out way more than it should. Like, every time I brush it, I find clumps of hair in the bristles. It’s kind of freaking me out, honestly! I've tried a couple of different shampoos, but nothing seems to help. Friends keep telling me I should look into “which shampoo is best for hair growth and thickness” but I don’t even know where to start. One of my friends suggested this fancy brand that’s supposed to work wonders, but it’s really expensive. And I wonder if the price tag actually means anything. Like, can a shampoo really... like, make my hair grow? I've also read some articles that say certain ingredients are better for growth but, honestly, I feel lost. Should I be looking for natural options, or are those chemical ones actually ok? I am also kinda unsure about using oils or other treatments along with shampoo. Any recommendations on which shampoo is best for hair growth and thickness? Or advice on what else might help? I’d really appreciate any input because it's getting super frustrating! Thank you!

Doctors' responses

When it comes to hair growth and thickness from an Ayurvedic perspective, the focus should be on overall scalp health and balancing the body’s doshas, primarily Vata and Pitta. Hair loss can often be a result of imbalances within these doshas. Before turning to a specific shampoo, consider Ayurvedic practices that address the root cause.

Amla (Indian Gooseberry), Bhringraj, Shikakai, and Brahmi are potent herbs often recommended in Ayurveda for nourishing the scalp and strengthening hair follicles. Look for shampoos containing these ingredients as they promote hair health naturally. Ayurvedic shampoos usually lack harsh chemicals like sulfates and parabens, which can further irritate the scalp and contribute to hair thinning.

Also, think beyond just shampoo; a holistic approach is essential. Consider massaging your scalp with warm oil like coconut or sesame oil infused with Ayurvedic herbs such as Bhringraj or Brahmi. This not only nourishes the scalp but stimulates circulation, enhancing hair growth. Regular oil massages, at least twice a week, can be very beneficial.

Ensure that you’re consuming a diet rich in proteins, iron, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins such as B and E that are crucial for hair health. Include plenty of leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. Hydration is also key, so ensure you drink enough water daily.

Stress can be a hidden factor in hair loss; practicing yoga, meditation, or simple deep breathing exercises can help manage this. Proper sleep plays a fundamental role too, aim for 7-8 hours of quality rest a night.

Finally, remember that some degree of hair fall is normal. However, if the situation doesn’t improve, it might be advisable to seek professional help from a trichologist or a healthcare provider to rule out underlying medical conditions.

When considering which shampoo is best for hair growth and thickness, it’s important to understand that while shampoos can support your hair health, they may not directly cause hair growth. In the Siddha-Ayurvedic tradition, hair issues are often linked to imbalances in the doshas—particularly pitta—and poor nourishment of the sapta dhatus (tissue systems).

For a good shampoo, opt for ones that contain natural ingredients like brahmi, bhringraj, and amla, which are known to support hair health. Avoid shampoos with harsh chemicals, as they can irritate the scalp and worsen hair loss issues.

You might also consider integrating oil treatments into your routine. Massaging your scalp with warm bhringraj oil or coconut oil mixed with a few drops of rosemary essential oil can enhance blood circulation to the follicles, potentially improving hair growth over time. Do this once or twice a week before shampooing.

Focus also on balancing your diet according to your dosha type to nourish your body from within. Foods rich in proteins, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids can support the sapta dhatus and help maintain healthy hair.

Additionally, evaluate stress levels and sleep patterns. High stress and poor rest can exacerbate hair loss, so incorporating yoga or meditation could be beneficial to balance mental and physical health.

If you experience rapid hair loss or other health symptoms, it’s crucial to consult with a healthcare professional to explore other underlying causes.
