In Ayurveda, psoriasis, often described as “Kitibha” or “Ekakushta,” is considered a chronic condition where the root causes lie in the imbalance of Vata and Kapha doshas, often with the involvement of high Pitta. While Ayurveda focuses on managing and controlling symptoms, complete eradication or a cure as per the modern medical sense may not always be achievable. Instead, Ayurveda aims to bring about a substantial improvement in quality of life and symptom management through lifestyle, diet, and therapies.

A key component of Ayurvedic treatment is to address Agni (digestive fire) and Ama (toxins) since psoriasis is viewed as a systemic issue that stems from poor digestion and accumulation of toxins. One possible approach includes Panchakarma, a detoxification regime, customized as per your body constitution. Panchakarma can be intensive; one must undergo this after consulting a qualified practitioner.

Diet plays a significant role too. Avoiding foods that aggravate Pitta and Kapha such as spicy, oily, and processed foods can help. Instead, favor a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, particularly bitter gourd, neem, and turmeric, which possess detoxifying properties. Staying hydrated with warm water can aid digestion.

Lifestyle modifications, like regular yoga and pranayama, are recommended to maintain mental calmness and balance doshas. Stress often exacerbates psoriasis, so incorporating mindfulness practices or meditation every day would be beneficial. Applying medicated oils like Maha Marichyadi Thailam or Turmeric-infused coconut oil can soothe the skin topically.

Improvement time varies depending on individual conditions and adherence to regimen. Typically, noticeable changes might occur within a few weeks to months. It’s essential to be consistent and patient, as Ayurvedic treatments show cumulative benefits over time. Regular follow-ups with an Ayurvedic practitioner help in fine-tuning the approach to suit your needs better.
