is curd good for skin - #42295

Emily

I am dealing with some skin issues lately, and I keep hearing people talk about how curd can help with that, but I'm not sure if it actually works. A few months ago, I started noticing that my skin was getting really dry and flaky, and it's super annoying. I've tried a bunch of creams and stuff but nothing seems to stick. My aunt swears by curd for skin—she says it's her holy grail! 😅 She even posts pics on social media of DIY masks with cucumber and curd, and all that. Last week, I decided to give it a shot—I applied some curd mixed with honey on my face and left it for about 20 mins. It felt nice and cooling, but I'm just wondering, is curd good for skin really? Like, does it help with dryness or acne, or is it just a temporary fix? I’ve also read that curd can have some nutritional benefits if you eat it too, so maybe it's a two-for-one deal? I totally want to know if there are any risks too? Should I be careful about using curd on my face with the possibility of allergic reactions or anything? Could I end up making my skin worse instead? Any thoughts or experiences with this would be awesome!

Curd, or yogurt, indeed has been utilized traditionally in Ayurveda for its nourishing and cooling properties, but your concerns are valid. It’s often hailed as a natural moisturizer, potentially beneficial for dry, flaky skin due its lactic acid content which gently exfoliates and hydrates. When applied topically, curd can help retain skin moisture, thus temporarily alleviating dryness and giving a soothing feel, which you experenced.

For skin prone to acne, curd may help to an extent due to its probiotic properties that promote healthy skin flora. Its ability to mildly exfoliate can unclog pores, but it might not address the root cause of acne if it stems from internal imbalances or more severe bacterial issues.

Eating curd, on the other hand, can support your skin health from the inside. It’s packed with probiotics and nutrients like calcium and vitamin D, which promote overall health, including your skin. Incorporating it into your diet could, in turn, contribute to balanced digestion and eventually reflect on your skin’s radiance.

Regarding risks, it is important to consider allergies or intolerance. Some individuals might react to lactic acid or other compounds naturally present in curd. Before full-scale application, patch test a small area first to mitigate risk. It’s worth mentioning that curd should be avoided if you have sensitive or very oily skin, as it might trigger excess sebum production.

In summary, while curd can offer certain benefits for your skin, they’re more supplementary rather than standalone cures for persistent issues like acne. If dryness persists or if you have underlying skin conditions, it may be helpful to consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner. They can tailor guidance more specifically to your Prakriti (body constitution) and dosha imbalances. Moreover, despite its benefits, balancing it with a comprehensive skin care routine and healthy diet is essential for sustainable results, so it might just be part of the solution, not all.

Curd, or yogurt, is indeed a beneficial element for skin care from both an external and internal perspective, especially when viewed through an Ayurvedic lens. It suits many skin types, often providing soothing and nourishing effects, particularly for dry or flaky skin conditions. The natural probiotics and lactic acid in curd can gently exfoliate dead skin cells, improve moisture retention, and support a hydrated complexion. However, the response of skin to curd varies depending on one’s unique dosha, or body constitution.

For vata-dominant individuals, who often face dry skin issues, curd helps pacify excess vata by adding moisture. When mixed with honey, it enhances the hydrating effect, making it a good remedy for temporarily relieving dryness. As for acne, curd’s gentle acidity can help rebalance the skin’s pH and maintain cleanliness, although its efficacy might not equal more targeted treatments.

Consuming curd can benefit internal health, promoting good digestion and thus supporting skin health from within. The balance of internal agni, or digestive fire, influences the complexion—when digestion is proper, skin health usually improves.

As with any skincare ingredient, potential allergic reactions are possible, although rare with curd. Always conduct a patch test on a small area before wider application. If issues like redness or irritation occur, it might be best to discontinue use topically.

For optimal safety, ensure the curd is fresh. Avoid exposure to sunlight when curd is applied to the skin, as this might cause photosensitivity. If your skin continues to remain dry despite remedies, or if irritation occurs, consider consulting a practitioner who can assess any underlying dosha imbalances and recommend a tailored treatment.
