Doctors' responses

Alopecia areata, characterized by patchy hair loss, can be a challenging condition. In Ayurveda, it is often viewed as an imbalance of the pitta and vata doshas. Addressing this requires a comprehensive plan focusing on diet, lifestyle, and local treatment.

Start with dietary adjustments. A pitta-pacifying diet may help, focusing on cooling and soothing foods such as cilantro, bitter gourd, and coconut water. Avoid spicy, oily, and fried foods which might increase pitta. Hydration is crucial; ensure he drinks sufficient water daily.

In terms of lifestyle, stress management is important as stress can exacerbate alopecia. Regular practice of yoga or meditation can aid in calming the mind. Encourage daily routines that include regular sleep schedules and adequate rest.

For local treatment, try gentle massage of the affected area with oils. Medicated oils like Bhringraj Oil or Brahmi Oil are often recommended for their benefits in hair growth. Massage lightly onto the scalp, let sit for 30 minutes before washing off. This should be done maybe twice a week.

Herbal remedies such as drinking amla juice and taking ashwagandha supplements (after consulting with a healthcare provider) could support hair growth and reduce stress.

Developing a healthy agni, or digestive fire, can enhance nutrient absorption and overall health; introduce digestion-aiding spices like cumin, coriander, and fennel in cooking.

It’s important to monitor the patch for any signs of a change (such as increased redness, or a rise in size) that might warrant a dermatologist visit. Always consult with a healthcare professional before starting new treatments. The approach should be gradual, observing your son’s response to these adjustments.
