which henna powder is best for hair - #43970

Emma

I am super confused about henna lately and could really use some help. Like, I've been experimenting with different henna powders for my hair, and I honestly don’t know which henna powder is best for hair anymore! I used to just grab whatever was on sale, but then I learned from a friend that there are different qualities and types out there. So last week, I bought a pack that said “100% natural” but my hair ended up feeling so dry and like straw afterward. Not cool! Then, I tried a different one, some fancy organic one or whatever, and though it smelled lovely, it didn’t seem to dye my hair at all! Now I’m worried about whether I’m even searching for the right thing. Like, half the time I think I want that rich, dark color but on the other hand, I fear that with the wrong henna powder, my scalp might get irritated. Do you think there are specific brands or types that would be candidates for best henna powder for hair? Or does it just all come down to personal preference? I want shiny, healthy hair that has some color to it, without the frizzy disaster! Would appreciate any recs or tips from those who are more seasoned in this henna journey than I am! Thanks a ton!

Choosing the right henna for your hair can indeed be a tricky task, especially when bombarded with so many options. Let’s get to the crux of what makes certain henna powders stand out. Ideally, you’d be lookin for a henna that is both finely powdered to ensure smooth application and one that is also fresh for optimal dye release – typically from recent harvests.

Authentic henna comes from the plant Lawsonia inermis. The quality of henna depends on the specific region where it’s grown because each has its unique climate and soil conditions. Rajasthani henna, for instance, tends to give a deep color and is often favored for its ability to give a richer, darker hue. Egyptian henna, on the other hand, offers a more subtle tint.

Now, when considering your experience with dry hair after use, it may be that it wasn’t the henna itself but possibly the lack of proper preparation or post-care. Dryness often occurs if the henna is left on for too long or if the mixture wasn’t appropriately balanced with moisture-replenishing additives. Mixing henna with coconut milk, a bit of yogurt, or even just adding a splash of an essential oil like argan or almond, can mitigate dryness.

Another aspect is to conduct a patch test not only to see how your hair might color but to check for any irritation, especially if you have concerns about your scalp’s sensitivity. Some commercial henna powders include metallic salts or additives, which might cause irritation and give unexpected results, so always opt for those labelled as 100% pure henna without additives.

While personal preference does play a role, generally, natural, organic henna from reputable brands like “Zenia” or “Jamila” is a safe bet, known for their fine sift and strong staining quality. The market also has pre-mixed ready henna packs, sometimes infused with indigo for a darker shade, allowing for easier application process.

And as a final tip – conditioning after a henna treatment with a good natural conditioner or a deep conditioning hair mask can help restore moisture and give you that shiny lustrous hair you’re aiming for.
