I am really freaking out lately because my hair has been changing, and I’ve been thinking about how does curd makes hair white. A few months ago, I started noticing some greys popping up, and it’s been driving me nuts! Like, I’m only in my late 30s and I can't believe I’m already looking old! I’ve heard a bunch of things about how does curd makes hair white but honestly, I don’t know what to believe. My mom swears by curd for hair health, saying it nourishes and strengthens it. So, I started using curd in my hair mask every week, thinking it’d help with shine and maybe even prevent more greys. But then I heard from a friend that it has an opposite effect and that it can actually lead to more white hair! Like, even just the other day, I felt like my hair looked even grayer after using it, which is just so weird, right? Has anyone experienced this? Does curd makes hair white or is that just a myth? Should I stop using it or stick to it longer? I am confused and just want to make sure I’m doing the right thing!!!!

Curd, or yogurt, is often used in Ayurvedic hair care for its nourishing and conditioning properties. It’s known to be rich in proteins, which strengthen hair and improve texture. There’s no conclusive scientific or Ayurvedic evidence to suggest that curd consumption or application turns hair white. Hair greying is usually related to genetic factors, aging, stress, or imbalances in pitta dosha according to Ayurveda.

The confusion around curd likely stems from the cooling nature of curd, which might affect individuals who already have an imbalance in their body, notably if you’re experiencing stress or have a diet high in pitta-aggravating foods (spicy, sour, salty). In such cases, it’s helpful to balance pitta with cooling and nourishing food, which curd actually supports when consumed properly.

If curd seems to make your hair appear grayer, it might be from the contrast it creates by making your hair shinier, thus reflecting light differently. To manage greying with Ayurveda, consider focusing on internal balance. Incorporating Amla (Indian gooseberry) into your diet or hair care routine can be beneficial. Curd will not make your hair turn white; that’s a common myth. In fact, curd is often used for its nourishing and moisturizing benefits for hair. The proteins and lactic acid in curd can strengthen hair and enhance shine. However, the notion that curd causes hair to turn white lacks scientific or Ayurvedic basis.

That said, premature greying can be attributed to a variety of factors. In Ayurveda, it is often associated with imbalances in the doshas, particularly Pitta. Stress, poor diet, genetic factors, and excessive chemical exposure can also contribute to greying. Addressing these factors is crucial, and curd alone won’t solve the problem if these issues remain unchecked.

From a Siddha-Ayurvedic perspective, you might want to consider incorporating amla (Indian gooseberry), which is known for its rich vitamin C content and is a potent Pitta pacifier. You can consume amla as a supplement or use it in oil form for hair care. Additionally, incorporating more natural iron and zinc sources in your diet can support hair health.
