Hello, Thank you for sharing your concern. Based on Ayurvedic perspective , your father’s rough, dry skin and itching are likely due to an aggravated Vata dosha, which is common in the elderly. But look for any rashes if present. If it’s just dryness then I recommend gentle external treatments such as daily abhyanga (oil massage) using warm Nalpamaradi or Eladi oil to deeply moisturize and soothe his skin. You can order these online. You might also consider using a medicated herbal oil like Mahanarayan oil, which is traditionally used for skin nourishment and to calm Vata if there is associated pain. Additionally, if his digestion permits, having 1 tsp cow ghee in the morning on empty stomach may help improve overall vitality and skin health. He can also have Triphala churna at night to cleanse his system everyday to rule out any toxins. Neem oil can be used locally if there is inflammation or a rash along with redness. Would not recommend any internal medicine without examining him.

Due to ageing your father is suffering from senile pruritis. Use glycerin soap for bathing. Use any natural moisturizer for local application.

Hi Prasanna,

I’m sorry to hear about your father’s discomfort. Can you share if his skin is also showing any signs of redness, rashes, or other dryness-related issues like cracks? Does he experience any other symptoms, such as joint pain or digestive problems?

For topical relief, he can apply Aloe Vera gel or Coconut oil directly to the skin to soothe and moisturize.

Ensure he drinks plenty of warm water and follows a nourishing, easy-to-digest diet. Regular, gentle massage with warm oils like Almond or Coconut oil may also help hydrate and soften the skin.

Addressing skin concerns, especially for an elderly individual like your father, requires a careful approach. In Ayurveda, rough and dry skin can often be attributed to a Vata dosha imbalance. The dryness and itchiness suggest a disturbance in the Vata which may be due to environmental factors, diet, or his unique constitution.

First important step is to focus on hydration, both internally and externally. Encourage your father to drink sufficient warm water throughout the day, ideally boiled and then cooled to a comfortable temperature. This helps maintain the body’s moisture balance. Herbal teas such as ginger or tulsi can also be beneficial.

For topical application, using oils is highly recommended. Sesame oil, being warm and nourishing, is excellent for pacifying Vata. Lightly warm the oil and apply gently to his skin before his daily shower or bath. Allow the oil to be absorbed for about 20 to 30 minutes, then wash it off with lukewarm water.

Internally, enhancing gut health can also support skin moisture. Ghee (clarified butter) added to his meals can aid in lubricating the gut as well as his skin. Ensure his diet is rich in naturally oily foods like seeds and nuts, such as almonds and walnuts. You might also consider introducing foods that are soupy, warm, and comforting, reducing dry and airy foods like crackers and biscuits.

For additional herbal support, consider Triphala powder. It supports overall health, digestion and can aid the detoxification process. Dosage should be 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon at night with warm water, but consult a local Ayurvedic practitioner if you’re unsure how it fits with his current medications or health conditions.

His room environment is another aspect to check. If it’s too dry, utilizing a humidifier might help in increasing moisture levels in the air.

Lastly, regular check-ups with a local healthcare provider are essential. Given his advanced age, ensuring that there’s no underlying medical condition causing or aggravating this dryness is important.
