I have been diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver and stage 3B CKD. I am on a no/low salt diet. I read labels and if it has Phos in any of the ingredients I do not buy it. Would coconut and almond milk be good for my liver and kidneys?

••From both an Ayurvedic perspective and the standpoint of modern renal and hepatic nutrition, navigating a dual diagnosis of liver cirrhosis and Stage 3B Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) requires a highly deliberate, specialized approach to what you consume ​1. Coconut Milk ••​From an Ayurvedic viewpoint, coconut is Sheeta (cooling), Madhura (sweet), and highly pacifying to Pitta and Vata doshas. It is traditionally considered deeply nourishing (Brimhana) and gentle on the liver when consumed correctly. ••​For the Liver: Coconut milk contains medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which are easier for a cirrhotic liver to process compared to heavy animal fats. Its cooling nature helps soothe inflammatory conditions in the liver. ••​For the Kidneys (Stage 3B CKD): Pure, unfortified commercial coconut milk (the liquid beverage, not the thick canned cooking cream) is naturally very low in sodium, potassium, and phosphorus. Medical literature notes that it carries an undetectable oxalate load, making it highly gentle on filtration pathways.
••​The Ayurvedic Caveat: Thick, heavy, or canned coconut milk is highly Guru (heavy to digest) and can aggravate Kapha, leading to sluggish digestion and fluid retention (Shotha), which must be strictly avoided in both cirrhosis and advanced CKD. ​2. Almond Milk ••​Almonds are considered Vrishya (nourishing) and Balya (strength-giving) in Ayurveda. However, they are also inherently warm (Ushna Virya) and heavy, meaning they require a robust digestive fire to process. ••​For the Liver & Kidneys: Naturally derived, unfortified almond milk is exceptionally low in phosphorus and potassium compared to dairy milk, and it is low in protein, which minimizes the nitrogenous workload on your kidneys.
••​The Major Clinical Warning: Almonds are inherently very high in oxalates. When kidney function drops to Stage 3B, the body’s ability to excrete oxalates declines. This can cause plasma oxalate levels to rise, potentially leading to the formation of micro-crystals or stones, which can accelerate kidney damage. ••Strictly Avoid Fortification: Since you already screen for “Phos” (like tricalcium phosphate), also watch out for added potassium (such as dipotassium phosphate or potassium citrate) and heavy calcium fortification. Many brands pack up to 35–45% of your daily calcium into one cup, which can overtax Stage 3B kidneys. Look for “organic” or “minimal ingredient” cartons. ••​Watch the Volume: In both cirrhosis and CKD, fluid balance is critical to prevent edema or ascites.
