••Taking a step back to look at the numbers on that label can instantly clear up a lot of anxiety. It is completely understandable to look at a number like 4000 mg and feel like it is an aggressively high dose. However, from both a pharmacological and classical Ayurvedic perspective, taking just one capsule is highly unlikely to be “too much” or cause you any harm. ••Decoding the Label: De-escalating the “4000 mg” The number 4000 mg is a marketing metric called “crude herb equivalent,” not the actual weight of the powder inside the capsule. ••The Math: The label states that two capsules contain 1000 mg of a 4:1 to 6:1 extract. Per Capsule Reality: This means each individual capsule contains roughly 500 mg of concentrated extract. ••The Ratio: A 4:1 or 6:1 extract means they took roughly 4 to 6 grams of raw, dry Arjuna bark (Terminalia arjuna) and concentrated it down into 1 gram of water-soluble or alcohol-soluble extract. So, by taking one capsule, you have actually ingested about 500 mg of Arjuna extract. 2. The Ayurvedic Perspective on Dosing In classical Ayurvedic practice, Arjuna is considered a highly safe, Hridaya (cardioprotective) herb with a very wide therapeutic window. ••Classical Churna (Powder) Dosage: The standard classical dose for Arjuna Churna (raw bark powder) is 3 to 6 grams per day, often administered as a Ksheerapak (milk decoction). ••Extract Dosage: For a concentrated extract (Ghanasatva), a standard clinical dose typically ranges from 500 mg to 1000 mg daily, split into divided doses. ••Why You Might “Feel” It Is Too Much Even though 500 mg is a safe dose, herbs affect everyone’s Prakriti (constitution) differently. If you are feeling off, it could be due to a few mild, known attributes of the herb: ••Digestive Heavy Quality (Guru Guna): Arjuna has an astringent taste (Kashaya Rasa) and a heavy quality. If taken on an empty stomach, an extract can occasionally cause mild gastric irritation, nausea, or a feeling of heaviness in the stomach. ••Mild Blood Pressure/Heart Rate Effects: Arjuna naturally supports normal circulation and can mildly relax blood vessels. If you are naturally prone to low blood pressure, or if you took it while dehydrated, you might feel slightly lightheaded or notice a subtle shift in your pulse. 4. Next Steps & Best Practices ••What to do right now: If you feel fine, don’t worry—the herb will naturally metabolize. If you have a touch of nausea or a scratchy throat from the astringency, drink a few sips of warm water or warm milk. Milk acts as an excellent Anupana (vehicle) for Arjuna, neutralizing its dryness and soothing the stomach. ••If you decide to continue using it, consider these adjustments: Take it with food: Never take concentrated extracts on a completely empty stomach if you are sensitive. ••Stick to one: If the full serving size (two capsules/1000 mg extract) feels heavy or unnecessary, staying at one capsule (500 mg extract) is a perfectly reasonable maintenance dose.
