It’s good that you’re noticing this. Insomnia can sometimes occur after stopping long-term use of Sarpagandha (Rauwolfia serpentina). Since it has a calming effect on the nervous system, discontinuing it—especially after prolonged use like 1.5 years—may lead to sleep disturbances or a sense of restlessness.
Why this might be happening ?
It may be due to withdrawal effect from Sarpagandha (it has mild sedative properties) or can be due to stress / overthinking cycle after stopping medication.
I can suggest you with following medications.
Aswagandha tab 1-0-1, after food
Pancharavinda choorna 1 teaspoon with milk at bedtime.
Foot massage (Padabhyanga) with sesame oil / coconut oil for about 30minutes in evening and wash it off.
Please consider the following also :
Fix a proper sleep time that’s very much important
Avoid phone/laptop 1 hour before bed
Keep lights dim after 8:30 pm
Start practicing meditation and pranayama.
Hope you get well soon
Thank you

Hi! I’m an assistant to the Ask Ayurveda doctors. I’ve carefully reviewed your question.
I will explain your symptoms through the Ayurvedic perspective so you understand what is happening in your body as a whole.
Insomnia, especially after discontinuing a herb like Sarpagandha, can be understood through the lens of Vata imbalance in Ayurveda. Sarpagandha is known for its calming properties, and stopping it might have led to an increase in Vata dosha, which governs movement and the nervous system, leading to restless sleep or insomnia.
The symptoms of insomnia can manifest due to increased dryness, irregularity, and restlessness, all characteristics of Vata. This imbalance could be exacerbated by stress, irregular routines, or dietary factors that aggravate Vata, such as cold, dry, or raw foods.
Ayurveda sees insomnia not just as a sleep issue but as a systemic imbalance affecting your entire being. The transition from Sarpagandha to allopathic medication might have disrupted your body’s equilibrium, increasing Vata and affecting your sleep cycle.
To give doctors a precise and effective treatment plan, your answers to the questions below are essential. Without this information, the recommendations will be more general and less accurate.
Please answer each question as clearly as possible.
1. How long have you been experiencing insomnia since stopping Sarpagandha? 2. What is the severity of your insomnia? Is it mild, moderate, severe, or does it vary? 3. Do you notice any specific triggers for your insomnia, such as stress, caffeine intake, or screen time before bed? 4. How would you describe your daily routine and dietary habits? Are there any irregularities? 5. Have you noticed any changes in your digestion or appetite since discontinuing Sarpagandha? 6. How is your stress level currently, and do you practice any relaxation techniques? 7. Have you tried any other natural remedies or lifestyle changes to address your insomnia?
Your detailed responses will help in formulating a more tailored and effective Ayurvedic approach to restoring your sleep balance.
Hi i have stopped sarpagandha before 3 months and i could not fall asleep easily. But if i sleep i m able to sleep fully for 6 hours but starting sleep is the problem. I don’t have any anxiety or depression problem. I m tired because of this sleep issue. Sometimes i get sleep only after 3 am. What can be done to solve this? I m not able to figure it out with allopathy doctors
Sleep disturbance like this is quite common when medicines like Sarpagandha are stopped, because it has a natural calming effect on the nervous system. When it’s withdrawn, the body sometimes takes time to rebalance. You can consider: 1)ashwagandha churna – ½ tsp at night with warm milk 2)brahmi (tablet or syrup form) – for calming mind 3)jatamansi churna – very effective for sleep regulation Night routine- Sleep by 10–10:30 pm Avoid mobile/screens 1 hour before bed Sit quietly or do deep breathing (5–10 min) Important precautions- Since you are on allopathy BP medicines, avoid restarting Sarpagandha on your own Monitor BP regularly If you’d like, I can create a personalized sleep + BP-friendly Ayurvedic plan (with exact doses, timing, and diet) tailored to her body type and current medicines.
