Doctors' responses
In mumps with pain, swelling, fever, and phlegm, digestion becomes weak and the body is already under stress. The focus should be on light, soft, warm, and easy-to-swallow foods that do not increase Kapha (phlegm) or strain the throat and salivary glands. Give foods like moong dal khichdi, soft rice with thin dal, vegetable soups, thin porridge, and well-cooked vegetables. Warm fluids are very important, so give warm water, light herbal teas (ginger + tulsi in mild quantity), and clear soups. King coconut water can be given in moderate quantity, as it helps hydration and is soothing. Avoid hard, spicy, sour, fried, and oily foods. Also avoid chicken, fish, and eggs for a few days, as they are heavier to digest and can increase congestion when digestion is weak. Cold foods, curd, ice cream, and refrigerated items should be strictly avoided as they worsen phlegm. Since he has difficulty chewing and some throat discomfort, keep meals semi-liquid and frequent in small portions. As swelling and pain reduce, diet can gradually return to normal. Usually, with proper diet and rest, recovery becomes smoother and faster over the next few days.
