Drinking water first thing in the morning before brushing is generally safe and can be beneficial for hydration and gut function. In most healthy individuals, it does not harm digestion or “contaminate” the gut. Saliva naturally contains bacteria, but the stomach has strong acid (HCl) that neutralizes and destroys most harmful microbes. So, swallowing saliva or drinking water before brushing does not create any risk to gut health. In fact, morning water intake can help stimulate bowel movement, improve hydration after sleep, and support metabolism. Brushing is mainly important for oral hygiene, but it does not have a direct impact on digestive safety when water is consumed before it. If you are comfortable and not experiencing any digestive issues, you can continue this habit without concern. Regards, Dr Raghuveer (Ayurvedacharya)
