How to treat a burn on the arm from boiling water that's red and painful? - #54390

The skin is red and there is a welt in the centre of the burnt area, which is about 5 inches long, 2 inches wide at the fattest part of the wound then tapers off to about a half inch wide. It's quite painful. The wound is less than 24 hours old.

This sounds like a fresh scald burn (likely superficial/partial thickness). First 24 hours care is very important. What to do immediately Cool the area with cool running water for 15–20 minutes (not ice) Remove any tight clothing/jewelry near the burn Gently pat dry — do not rub Local care Apply a clean, non-stick sterile dressing (or clean cloth if nothing else) Keep the area covered and protected Do not burst any blister/welt For pain You can take paracetamol if needed What you can apply (after cooling) Pure aloe vera gel (thin layer) OR Coconut oil (only after initial heat subsides, not immediately) Avoid (important) Ice directly on burn Toothpaste, butter, ink, etc. Tight bandaging When to see a doctor urgently Burn is large (your described size is borderline significant) Severe pain or increasing redness Pus, fever, or swelling If blister becomes large or skin peels Healing time Usually 7–14 days if superficial Keep it clean to prevent infection Ayurvedic support (optional) Jatyadi tail (after 2–3 days, once no active heat) Important Since it is 5-inch burn, better to get at least one medical evaluation, even if basic, to avoid infection and scarring.
