Hello, In Ayurveda, Periodic Limb Movement Disorder (PLMD) is often associated with an imbalance of Vata Dosha, specifically affecting the Majja Dhatu (nervous system) and Mansa Dhatu (muscles). When Vata becomes “unstable” or “dry,” it leads to involuntary movements and restlessness. ​ ​The goal is to provide Snehana (oleation) and Shamana (pacification) to the nervous system. Herbs that are Medhya (brain tonics) and Vata-hara (Vata-reducing) are prioritized to ground the energy before sleep. ​ Prescription : ​1. Dhanwantharam Ethailam (For External Application) This is a classic Vata-pacifying oil. Massaging the feet and calves (Padabhyanga) before bed helps calm the peripheral nerves and reduces the urge to move. ​Dose: Apply lukewarm oil to legs and feet 30 minutes before bed; wash off with warm water. ​2. Ashwagandharishtam A fermented liquid preparation that acts as a powerful nervine tonic. It helps reduce stress and relaxes the musculoskeletal system. ​Dose: 20 ml with an equal quantity of lukewarm water, twice daily after food. ​3. Manasamitra Vatakam A potent tablet used specifically for neurological and sleep-related disturbances. It helps stabilize the mind and nervous system. ​Dose: 1 tablet at night with a cup of warm milk or water before bed. ​4. Kalyanaka Ghritam Medicated ghee that nourishes the deeper tissues of the nervous system. Ghee is excellent for crossing the blood-brain barrier to soothe Vata. ​Dose: 1 teaspoon with warm milk or warm water on an empty stomach at night.

Thank you. I have just added the foot massage into my schedule and will focus on changing my life style. I am taking Jatamansi and Ashwagandha and will add the saraswatarisha. Thank you for your reply

Helpful Ayurvedic herbs commonly used for calming the nerves before bed include: Ashwagandha – supports the nervous system, reduces stress, and promotes better sleep quality. Brahmi – helps relax the mind and improve sleep calmness. Jatamansi – traditionally used for overactive nerves, anxiety, and disturbed sleep. Tagar – may help with relaxation and nighttime restlessness. Supportive bedtime habits: Drink warm milk with a small pinch of nutmeg or turmeric before sleep if tolerated. Gentle foot massage with warm sesame oil or cow ghee before bed helps calm Vata. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, smoking, and heavy meals at night. Stretching, slow breathing, or meditation for 10 minutes before sleep can reduce nerve excitability. Maintain regular sleep timing and reduce screen exposure 1 hour before bed.
