I was wondering if I mixed manjistha in my body lotions and oils would it help with the muscle pain. I've read that it helps internally when taken orally. I believe you said "1/2 teaspoon once a day". I will try this and see if it helps along with my some what good eating habits and exercising.

Age: 67
Chronic illnesses: Lower back pain, sciatica, neuropathy. Neck injury, significant arthritis in wrist, chronic pain.

Incorporating Manjistha into your regimen might offer relief, but let’s look at how you can potentially use it safely for fibromyalgia. Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia) is known for its anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties, which can aid in reducing overall bodily inflammation and support eliminaiton of toxins. It’s true that taking manjistha internally can be beneficial, especially for conditions linked to inflammation.

When considering manjistha for external use, mixing a bit of it with body oils or lotions can be an option. Use a small amount, like 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon, mixed with your preferred lotion or a carrier oil such as sesame or coconut oil. These oils provide additional nourishment, but, due to its warming nature, sesame is particularly useful in alleviating Vata which is commonly associated with fibromyalgia. Apply a gentle massage when applying, as it can help improve circulation and reduce tension in muscles. Be cautious and do a patch test first to ensure no skin reaction occurs.

While incorporating manjistha internally and externally, maintain your focus on a balanced diet and routine exercises, as you’ve mentioned. A diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods—like turmeric, ginger, fresh fruits, and vegetables—can further support managin symptoms. Gentle exercises like yoga and walking may also amplify the benefits by enhancing flexibility and reducing stiffness.

However, it’s important to approach changes mindfully. If symptoms persist or worsen, consider consulting with a local Ayurvedic practitioner in conjunction with your regular healthcare provider to confirm a plan that safely suits your individual needs. Integrating Ayurveda with holistic and biomedical insights often provides the most comprehensive support. Stay attentive to how your body responds and adjust your practices as needed.

Yes, manjistha is known for its detoxifying and anti-inflammatory properties, which can be beneficial in addressing conditions like fibromyalgia. However, its primary efficacy has been documented more so when used internally rather than topically for muscle pain. Mixing manjistha with your body lotions or oils might provide some minor relief on the skin level, but its benefits in terms of deep muscle pain relief are generally not that pronounced topically.

Internally, taking 1/2 teaspoon of manjistha powder with warm water once daily can help in cleansing the blood and reducing inflammation, potentially aiding fibromyalgia symptoms. This aligns well with your current plan, and you should notice the effects over time along with diet and exercise. Just ensure your digestive fire, or agni, is strong enough to assimilate it properly; minor digestive issues could arise if that’s not the case.

For fibromyalgia, it’s also vital to consider the balance of the vata dosha, often associated with nervous system and pain imbalances. You could enhance your routine with calming practices like gentle yoga and avoid excessive raw foods or cold environments, which could aggravate vata. Sleep hygiene and stress management are equally crucial — practices like abhyanga (oil massage) with warm sesame oil could be soothing for the muscles and nervous system.

Remember, despite these supportive measures, if your symptoms persist or worsen, consulting a healthcare provider for integrated care is advisable. Manjistha may be a part of the solution, but fibromyalgia often requires a comprehensive approach.
