Varicose veins can be quite persistent, especially when they’ve been around for such a long time. In Ayurveda, this condition is viewed as an imbalance of the Vata dosha, coupled with sluggish circulation. While completely curing varicose veins might be challenging, particularly after two decades, management and improvement of symptoms through Ayurvedic practices is feasible. Start by focusing on your diet. It’s important to enhance your blood circulation and overall health. Include plenty of freshly cooked vegetables and fruits like pomegranate and berries that are rich in antioxidants. Avoid deep-fried foods, processed sugar, and excessive caffeine as these can aggravate Vata. Incorporate herbs like Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica), an excellent herb known for its healing properties and benefits on vein health—consider introducing it as a supplement, after checking with a healthcare provider.

Externally, applying a paste made from Triphala powder mixed with water can help in reducing swelling and pain. Do this once a day, washing it off after 20 minutes. Regular massage, or ‘abhyanga’, with warm sesame oil can further improve circulation. Try to massage your legs gently and in upward strokes, in the direction of your heart.

Yoga, too, can be very beneficial, particularly poses like ‘Legs Up the Wall’ that encourages better blood flow back to the heart. Consistency in these practices is crucial—do them regulalry for noticeable results over time. Also, wearing compression stockings during the day can provide additional support to the veins.

Remember, these are supportive measures. It’s important to consult with a professional, especially if symptoms worsen or if there are new symptoms such as ulcers, skin changes, or severe pain. This approach is about improving quality of life and managing symptoms effectively, working in harmony with your body’s needs.
