2) Chandraprabha Vati – ¼ tablet twice daily after food 3) Guduchi Satva – 250 mg twice daily with honey/water. 4) Punarnava Mandur – ¼ tablet twice daily after food. —Pathya (Diet & Lifestyle): Low-salt diet. Fresh, light, easily digestible food. Avoid packaged foods, chips, pickles, bakery items, and cold drinks. Adequate rest and proper hydration as advised by the nephrologist. —Advice: Continue all medicines prescribed by the pediatric nephrologist; do not stop steroids abruptly. Monitor urine protein, body weight, swelling, and blood pressure regularly. Follow up with a qualified Ayurvedic physician for dose adjustment according to age and weight. —Investigations: Urine Routine & Protein Urine Protein/Creatinine Ratio Serum Albumin Kidney Function Test (RFT) Lipid Profile Blood Pressure monitoring regularly.
••I completely understand your concern. Seeing your young child go through frequent relapses of Nephrotic Syndrome (specifically Steroid-Dependent Nephrotic Syndrome, or SDNS) and having to undergo repeated courses of heavy steroids can be incredibly distressing and exhausting for a parent. ••In Ayurveda, we view Nephrotic Syndrome under the umbrella of Vrikka Roga (kidney disorders) involving imbalances in Kapha and Vata doshas, which lead to the accumulation of toxins (Ama) and fluid retention (Shotha) because the body’s channels (Srotas) are blocked. ••Important Clinical Precaution Crucial Note: Please do not stop or abruptly reduce her current steroid dose on your own. Abrupt withdrawal of steroids can cause a severe, life-threatening crisis. Ayurvedic treatment must be introduced parallel to her current conventional medications. As her kidney function stabilizes and relapses reduce, her pediatric nephrologist can gradually taper the steroids safely. Line of Ayurvedic Treatment for Pediatric SDNS To prevent frequent relapses, Ayurvedic pharmacology focuses on Rasayana (rejuvenative/immunomodulatory), Mootrala (diuretic), and Vrikka-Poshaka (kidney-protective) herbs. Because she is only 6 years old, the doses must be mild, palatable, and highly specific. 1. Immunomodulators to Stop Frequent Relapses SDNS is fundamentally an immune-mediated disorder. To correct her immune response so her body stops attacking the glomerular basement membrane, we use specific Rasayana herbs: ••Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia): An excellent immunomodulator that helps correct the hyper-reactive immune system without suppressing it brutally. ••Amalaki (Indian Gooseberry): Rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants, it protects renal tissues from oxidative stress caused by chronic inflammation and heavy medication. 2. Kidney Protective & Repairing Herbs (Vrikka Balya) ••Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa): Literally meaning “that which makes new again,” Punarnava is the premier herb for kidney health. It reduces swelling (Shotha), maintains albumin levels, and helps repair the filtration barriers of the kidneys. ••Gokshura (Tribulus terrestris): A mild, safe diuretic for children that strengthens the urinary tract, cleanses the kidneys, and prevents protein leakage (proteinuria). Bhumi Amla (Phyllanthus niruri): Excellent for cellular protection and clearing Ama (toxins) from the blood and kidneys. ••Dietary and Lifestyle Modifications (Ahara & Vihara) In Ayurveda, diet is half the medicine. Managing her diet strictly will drastically reduce the workload on her kidneys. Restrict Sodium: Avoid all processed foods, chips, pickles, biscuits, and canned items. Use minimal salt in fresh home-cooked food. ••Monitored Protein: Give high-quality, easily digestible proteins (like well-cooked green gram/Moong dal) but do not overload her diet with heavy proteins, as the kidneys have to work harder to filter them. ••Water Management: Give water only as advised by her nephrologist, based on her daily urine output and swelling. Ensure the water is warm or boiled with a small pinch of ginger or coriander seeds to aid digestion. ••Avoid Cold Foods: Keep her away from ice creams, refrigerated foods, and heavy, mucus-forming foods (like curd or heavy sweets) which increase Kapha and trigger immune relapses.
