Support for My Daughter's Joint Inflammation - #39293
My 5 year old healthy daughter woke up one morning with visibly swollen hands and feet - she was screaming in pain as couldn’t use them. They were hot to the touch. I took her to the hospital and they did lots of tests…they think from her bloods that she has JIA with rheumatoid factor….but we have further tests to confirm the RF for the second time. It’s bilaterally in her hands and ankles/feet. I am trying my best to take out all gluten and sugar and more whole foods - but is there anything you can suggest to support her? I want to stop inflammation and stop any deformity in her limbs

Addressing your daughter’s condition with an Ayurvedic approach involves several steps that can complement your current efforts. First, understanding that Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) is closely related to a Vata imbalance is essential. This imbalance can lead to inflammation and pain in the joints. So, aiming to balance Vata and reduce inflammation is vital.
Diet plays a crucial role. Continue to remove gluten and sugar as they’re known to aggravate inflammation. Incorporate warming and nourishing foods that pacify Vata such as: cooked vegetables like carrots, sweet potatoes, and beetroot. Use healthy fats like ghee or coconut oil, which can help lubricate the joints. Include spices known for their anti-inflammatory properties such as turmeric and ginger - you can add these to warm milk or food preparations.
Herbs like Ashwagandha and Shatavari can be supportive, as they possess anti-inflammatory and rejuvenating properties. Consult an Ayurvedic practitioner about appropriate doses for children.
A gentle abhyanga (oil massage) with warm sesame oil can help soothe her muscles and joints. Do this perhaps daily or at least a few times a week. Just make sure the oil is warm before application.
Hydration is key, so ensure she’s drinking plenty of warm water throughout the day to keep her system hydrated and to flush out toxins.
For lifestyle, try to involve her in mild joint-friendly activities such as swimming, which can improve flexibility and reduce stiffness without stressing the joints.
Finally, don’t forget the importance of rest. Restorative activities and ensuring she gets enough sleep are crucial as they allow the body to heal naturally. Given her condition, always consult with your healthcare provider before making any significant changes to her treatment routine.
When managing juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), especially with rheumatoid factor, it’s key to reduce inflammation and support joint health. In Siddha Ayurveda, we consider factors like dosha imbalances and agni (digestive fire) that may be contributing. Your effort with diet, reducing gluten and sugar, supports calming vata and pitta doshas, which play a big role in inflammation. Here are some strategies:
1. Include turmeric in her diet. Turmeric is widely known for its anti-inflammatory properties. You can add a small pinch of organic turmeric to meals or mix it into warm milk with a pinch of black pepper to enhance absorption.
2. Start each day with a small amount of boiled ginger tea. Boil a few slices of fresh ginger in water. Allow it to cool to a safe temperature before offering it to your daughter. Ginger can help improve circulation in the affected areas and reduce swelling.
3. Massage slightly warm sesame oil gently onto her swollen joints. Sesame oil is warming and lubricating, helping pacify aggravated vata. Ensure the oil is warm, not hot, and use gentle, circular motions.
4. Encourage her to practice gentle, playful yoga tailored for children, such as simple stretching and deep breathing exercises. This can improve flexibility and joint mobility.
5. Balance her meals by including fresh vegetables, mung or red lentils, and stewed apples or pears, which are beneficial for maintaining a balanced agni.
If her symptoms worsen, or you notice fever, extreme fatigue, or other unusual signs, follow up with her healthcare provider promptly. While Ayurveda can complement conventional treatments, it’s crucial to work with her doctors for overall care.
