Experiencing acid reflux, particularly at night, can indeed be distressing and interrupt your sleep significantly. In Ayurveda, GERD is often linked to an imbalance in Pitta dosha which governs digestion and metabolism. To address this, you can consider a few lifestyle and dietary modifications.

First, focus on your evening meal. Try to have dinner at least about 2 to 3 hours before bed, ensuring it’s light and easily digestible. Avoid heavy, spicy, or fried foods as they can aggravate the condition. Opt for foods that are cooling and alkaline in nature, such as boiled vegetables or moong dal.

Incorporate herbal teas, such as licorice root tea, which is soothing and can help in coating the stomach lining, easing discomfort. Make sure to drink it an hour after meals. Another useful home remedy is to consume only small sips of warm water throughout the day, which can aid in balancing the agni, or digestive fire, without putting stress on the stomach.

Additionally, elevate the head of your bed slightly. This can reduce the chances of stomach acid flowing back into the esophagus while lying down. Keep your sleeping position in mind; try lying on your left side as a position naturally prevents acid movement upwards.

Try practicing, some relaxation techniques before bedtime to reduce stress, which is a known trigger for GERD symptoms It might include gentle yoga or Pranayama exercises. These can help regulate the Pitta energy and promote a calm state conducive for sleep.

Be careful with your daily routine including avoiding triggers like caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco. These substances are known to relax lower esophageal sphincter, allowing stomach acid to reflux upward. Consistency with these measures over time can promote a more balanced digestive system and alleviate nighttime reflux symptoms significantly.
