An ayruvedic practitioner in California has given my husband a black tablet for bowel cleanse. He did not put a name on the envelope. My husband experienced some blood. Not a lot and that ended. He is a kidney patient in late stage who has needed to take docusate to be able to have a movement. Can you tell us the name of this black tablet?

How long has your husband been taking the black tablet?:

- Less than a week

Has he experienced any other symptoms besides the blood?:

- No, just the blood

What other medications is he currently taking for his kidney condition?:

Doctors' responses

-A black Ayurvedic bowel cleanse tablet is often one of these: Triphala (sometimes dark/blackish) – mild laxative Haritaki – strong laxative, can irritate gut Activated charcoal tablets – used for “detox” Kshara or herbal purgatives – strong bowel cleanse, can cause bleeding -Stop the black tablet if u don’t know the name immediately. Blood in stool can be serious, especially with late-stage kidney disease. Contact his nephrologist right away. Monitor for more bleeding, weakness, or dizziness, and go to the ER if symptoms worsen. Do not take unknown Ayurvedic cleanses.

Its simple harmless AYURVEDIC treatment but is not safe or possible to identify a black its Ayurvedic tablet without name or prescription. Many Ayurvedic tablets are black (like Gandhak Rasayan, Ichhabhedi Ras, Krimikuthar Ras, Shuddh Shilajit, etc.) and some are strong purgatives that can cause bleeding especially risky in late stage kidney disease. Consulting the who’s give medicine??
