Ovarian cysts and menopause - #17122

Angeliki
$8.19

I am 48 years old and up to last Summer I have had severe bleeding due to friboids. Then suddenly my period stopped for a few months only to come again at the end of January. My blood tests showed that I have estrogen dominance, while the other hormones have dropped. My latest examination showed that l have multiple ovarian cysts. The problem is that I have been having physical and psychological discomfort. I feel as if my period is coming, but it won't. I have all the symptoms, that is lower back and abdominal pain, swelling, tenderness but no period. Are ovarian cysts and menopause "compatible"? What can I do to alleviate all this? It has had an impact on my sleep since I have been waking up several times each night in a state of severe stress. Thank you so much, I am grateful for answering me.

Namaste Angeliki, Your body is going through a profound transition, and I truly understand how unsettling it must feel. At 48, you are in the perimenopausal phase, where hormonal fluctuations can be intense—especially when estrogen dominance is present. Fibroids, ovarian cysts, and irregular cycles are common when estrogen is not balanced with progesterone, which naturally declines with age. The feeling of an impending period without actual bleeding, along with lower back pain, abdominal discomfort, and tenderness, is often due to the body’s struggle to regulate these hormones. In Ayurveda, we see this as an imbalance in Vata (air & space) and Pitta (fire & water) doshas, causing stagnation in the reproductive system.

To ease your discomfort, we must balance Vata and Pitta, regulate estrogen levels, and support the body’s natural transition. Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) is an excellent herb for perimenopause—it gently balances estrogen, supports ovarian health, and relieves symptoms like bloating and lower back pain. Take ½ tsp Shatavari powder with warm milk before bed. Ashoka (Saraca asoca) is another wonderful herb for hormonal balance, helping to reduce cyst formation and ease menstrual irregularities. A decoction of Ashoka bark boiled in water (1 tsp per cup) can be taken in the morning. Abhyanga (daily self-massage with warm sesame oil) will calm Vata, reduce stress, and improve circulation in the pelvic area.

One of the most powerful natural remedies for fibroids, cysts, and stagnant menstrual energy is the CASTOR OIL pack. Castor oil deeply penetrates the tissues, improves lymphatic drainage, and helps dissolve excess growths over time. To do this, soak a clean cotton cloth in warm castor oil, place it over your lower abdomen, cover it with plastic wrap, and apply a warm water bottle for 30-45 minutes. Do this 3–4 times a week. This will reduce inflammation, promote circulation, and help shrink cysts naturally. After the pack, wipe the area clean and rest for some time.

Your sleep disturbances and stress are linked to your fluctuating hormones and underlying Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, which can further aggravate Vata. To improve sleep, drink a turmeric and nutmeg-infused warm milk (add a pinch of each) before bedtime—it supports hormonal balance and deep rest. Avoid stimulants like caffeine, spicy foods, and excess screen time in the evening. Nasya therapy (applying 2 drops of warm ghee or Brahmi oil in each nostril before bed) can calm the nervous system and reduce night-time stress. Gentle Yogic breathing (Anulom Vilom and Bhramari pranayama) before sleep will relax the mind and stabilize your emotions.

Ovarian cysts and menopause can indeed co-exist, but Ayurveda encourages supporting your body’s transition gracefully, rather than suppressing symptoms. A diet rich in healthy fats (ghee, sesame seeds, flaxseeds), whole grains, and cooked vegetables will provide nourishment and prevent further cyst formation. Warm, grounding foods are best. A mild detox—like drinking coriander, cumin, and fennel tea—can help clear hormonal imbalances gently. This is a sacred phase of life, and your body is seeking balance. With Ayurvedic herbs, castor oil packs, nourishing foods, self-care rituals, and a calmer mind, you can move through this transition with more ease and vitality. Wishing you strength and healing on this journey.

I understand how challenging and distressing this situation must be for you. Based on your symptoms, it seems that your body is experiencing a significant shift, which is not uncommon during perimenopause. The presence of ovarian cysts, estrogen dominance, and the associated physical and emotional discomforts indicate an imbalance in your Vata and Pitta doshas. Vata, which governs movement and flow in the body, often becomes aggravated during hormonal changes, leading to irregular cycles, pain, and emotional stress.

To help restore balance and alleviate your symptoms, I recommend a gentle approach. Start by nourishing your body with grounding, warm foods like soups, stews, cooked vegetables, and whole grains, which will calm Vata. Avoid cold, dry, or processed foods, as they can aggravate the imbalance. For hormone support, herbs like Shatavari and Ashoka are known to soothe the reproductive system and help balance estrogen levels, while Triphala can support detoxification and liver health.

To ease your mind and promote restful sleep, I encourage you to incorporate calming practices like meditation, pranayama (breathing exercises), and Abhyanga (self-massage with warm oil). These will help reduce anxiety, alleviate pain, and promote overall relaxation. A warm cup of Ashwagandha or chamomile tea before bed can further support your sleep and calm your nerves.

Most importantly, remember to honor your body with rest, balance, and self-compassion. With these Ayurvedic practices, you can gradually restore harmony to both your body and mind. If you need personalized support, an Ayurvedic practitioner can provide a more tailored approach to your specific needs.

In Ayurveda, your symptoms could indicate an imbalance in the Vata and Pitta doshas, with Vata contributing to irregularities in menstrual cycles and Pitta causing inflammation and heat, which can lead to cysts and discomfort. The symptoms you’re experiencing, such as lower back and abdominal pain, swelling, and tenderness, are often linked to an aggravated Vata dosha, which can also be influenced by the hormonal changes you’re going through. Ovarian cysts and menopause can indeed coexist, especially around your age, as hormone levels fluctuate. Estrogen dominance, as seen in your blood tests, can also contribute to these imbalances. To alleviate these symptoms, it is important to focus on calming the mind and balancing your hormones. Herbal remedies such as Ashoka, Shatavari, and Guduchi can help support the reproductive system and manage hormonal fluctuations. Additionally, incorporating anti-inflammatory herbs like Turmeric can help with cysts and reduce swelling. A diet rich in healthy fats (like ghee and sesame oil), cooling foods (such as cucumbers and leafy greens), and foods that support digestion (such as ginger and cumin) will help nourish your system and balance excess heat. For sleep and stress relief, practices like meditation, Pranayama (breathing exercises), and gentle yoga can soothe the nervous system and reduce stress, improving sleep. Considering your Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, it’s also important to manage stress and ensure your thyroid function is balanced, as it can impact your hormonal health. A holistic approach that includes lifestyle modifications, proper rest, and Ayurvedic herbs can significantly help restore balance and alleviate discomfort. Always work closely with both an Ayurvedic practitioner and your medical doctor for integrated care.

So, navigating through this mix of symptoms and hormonal changes can be really stressful. Let’s see how Ayurveda can lend a hand with this. In Ayurveda, anything to do with reproductive and hormonal health is often linked to Vata and Pitta imbalances, mainly due to the symptoms you’re experiencing like stress, pain, and irregular bleeding. The estrogen dominance you’re noticing can indicate these imbalances - all flaring up in menopause transition phase.

The ovarian cysts and menopause can definitely occur together. Menopause is such a hormonal rollercoaster that it can sometimes trigger cysts. Fibroids and cysts often play around with hormones ups and downs, making it more complicated.

To start balancing, calming Vata and Pitta doshas could really be helpful. Begin by looking at your diet. Warm, cooked foods, and moderate spices like ginger or turmeric can be very soothing. Also, think about avoiding cold or raw foods, caffeine, alcohol - they can irritate Vata-Pitta.

Have you tried castor oil packs? They can be quite effective for lowering abdominal discomfort. Warm a cloth with castor oil and place it on your abdomen for about 20-30 mins—3-4 times a week.

For sleep and stress, Ashwagandha and Brahmi might help—they’ve got calming properties. Taking Ashwagandha before bed can assist in unwinding and a restful sleep. Try some gentle yoga or Pranayama like Nadi Shodhana breathing—this can help ease the stress and discomfort.

When hormones imbalance and cysts are part of the picture, check in regularly with your doc too, especially if pain intensifies. You should keep an eye on these changes and symptoms. Ayurvedic methods offer support, but wouldn’t replace necessary medical treatment. It’s about finding that balance together. 😊
