A Bartholin cyst is usually a blocked Bartholin gland duct, leading to fluid accumulation. From an Ayurvedic point of view, this condition is generally described as a local “Shotha” (inflammatory swelling) with predominance of Kapha (blockage, fluid, swelling) and sometimes Vata (duct obstruction, pain, dryness of flow). Since your cyst is already reducing in size, this is a good sign that it may resolve with conservative care. In many mild cases, especially within the first few weeks, the body can reabsorb the fluid if the blockage opens naturally. Ayurvedic Approach to Bartholin Cyst (Non-surgical Support) 1. Continue Hot Sitz Baths (Most Important) You are already doing this, and it is the best natural treatment. How to do it properly: Warm water (not boiling) Sit for 15–20 minutes, 2–3 times daily You may add: A pinch of rock salt (Sendha namak) Or Neem leaves decoction (if available) Why it works (Ayurveda view): Reduces Kapha blockage Improves local circulation Helps natural drainage of fluid Softens the duct opening 2. Herbal Wash (Gentle Antibacterial + Healing) You can prepare a mild wash: Option A: Neem Water Boil neem leaves in water Cool and use as external wash Option B: Triphala Water 1 tsp Triphala powder in warm water Filter and use for cleansing Effect: Reduces infection risk Heals inflammation Keeps area clean without harsh chemicals 3. Turmeric Support (Internal + External) External: Mix turmeric + coconut oil Apply lightly around the area (not inside) Internal: ½ tsp turmeric in warm milk or water daily Ayurvedic effect: “Rakta Shodhana” (blood purification) Anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial action 4. Diet for Faster Healing (Kapha Reduction) Focus on light, warm, easy-to-digest food: Eat more: Warm soups Ginger water Steamed vegetables Cumin, coriander, fennel water Avoid: Cold drinks, ice cream Excess dairy (Kapha increases blockage) Fried or heavy foods Excess sugar 5. Herbal Ayurvedic Support (Optional) Guggulu preparations (like Kaishore Guggulu) – helps reduce swelling Triphala at night – supports detox and bowel clearance Haridra (Turmeric) capsules – anti-inflammatory support
••Here is a comprehensive Ayurvedic management plan for a Bartholin’s cyst:
1. Sthanika Chikitsa (Local external therapies)
Local management is highly effective because the vaginal mucosa absorbs herbo-mineral properties efficiently.
••Yoni Prakshalana (Medicated Vaginal Washing): Instead of plain hot water, use a warm Triphala Kwatha (decoction) or Panchavalkala Kwatha for sitz baths or local rinsing twice a day. Triphala acts as an excellent Vrana Shodhana (wound cleanser) and has proven antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that help maintain healthy vaginal pH.
••Yoni Lepa (Local Paste Application): Apply a thick paste of Dashanga Lepa mixed with a little warm water or honey directly over the cyst at bedtime. Alternatively, a traditional mix of pure turmeric (Haridra), a few drops of castor oil (Eranda Taila), and honey can be applied. This aids in Lekhana (scraping/reducing the cyst size) or helps it naturally subside.
••Yoni Pichu (Medicated Tamponing): Once the acute pain or swelling begins to lessen, inserting a sterile cotton gauze or tampon dipped in Jatyadi Taila or Triphala Ghrita for 1 to 2 hours helps in deep tissue healing and soothens the mucosal lining.
2. Abhyantara Chikitsa (Internal Oral Medications)
To treat the root cause and balance the doshas internally, classical Ayurvedic formulations focus on purifying the blood and scraping away cystic growths.
••Kanchanar Guggulu / Triphala Guggulu: 2 tablets twice a day after meals with warm water. Guggulu-based formulations are the premier choices in Ayurveda for treating Granthi (cysts) and Shotha (swelling) due to their potent anti-inflammatory and Lekhana (scraping) attributes.
••Punarnavashtak Kwatha or Punarnavadi Guggulu: 15–20 ml of the liquid decoction with an equal amount of warm water, or 2 tablets twice a day. Punarnava is highly effective at reducing fluid retention and localized edematous swelling.
••Gandhak Rasayana: 1 tablet twice a day. This acts as a natural blood purifier (Rakta Shodhak) and potent antibacterial agent to ensure that any underlying micro-infection is cleared.
3. Pathya-Apathya (Dietary & Lifestyle Modifications)
••Diet: Avoid Abhishyandi foods (slimy, heavy foods that block body channels) such as heavy dairy, yogurt, refined flour (maida), and excessive sweets. Minimize spicy, deeply fried, and sour foods that aggravate Pitta and Rakta. Focus on light, easily digestible (Laghu), and warm home-cooked meals.
••Hygiene: Maintain strict local hygiene. Wear breathable, loose cotton underwear to minimize friction and sweat accumulation.
