How to control pain in leg in case of spondylitis problem - #30602

My father has slight spondylitis problem.On standing long time, walking and running pain in leg occurs. There is not any vericose vain in place of pain. There is no swelling also. Only the left side leg has this problem. This has been since 6 months. We have tried medication but that is not fixing it.

Addressing pain from spondylitis requires a multi-pronged Ayurvedic approach that considers both the root cause and symptomatic relief. Spondylitis may imbalance Vata dosha, which can cause pain and stiffness. Here’s how to approach it:

Firstly, focus on diet. Increase the intake of Vata-pacifying foods in your father’s diet, such as warm, cooked meals. Favor sweet, sour, and salty flavors. Avoid cold, dry, and hard foods that aggravate Vata, such as crackers or raw salads. Ensure he drinks warm water, as it helps in soothing the Vata dosha.

Next, consider incorporating herbal remedies. Dashmool (a combination of ten roots) is beneficial for reducing inflammation and pain; it can be consumed in decoction form. Guggulu-based formulations, like Yograj Guggulu, can support joint health and reduce stiffness. Consult a local Ayurveda practitioner for dosage and suitability.

Daily routine modifications are vital. Encourage him to perform gentle, stretching exercises or yoga. Specific asanas like Tadasana (Mountain Pose) and Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose) may help alleviate pain by enhancing mobility and flexibility. However, any exercise should be done only after proper guidance and avoiding over-exertion.

Massage can provide significant relief. A regular Abhyanga (self-oil massage) using warm sesame or Mahanarayan oil can ease stiffness. This should be done in the morning before showering for around 15-20 minutes. Avoid massage if there’s inflammation or severe pain on the leg.

Include stress management techniques, as stress can exacerbate Vata imbalances. Meditation or pranayama (breathing exercises) may help in calming the mind and body.

In more severe cases, or if there’s no improvement, it’s crucial to consult a healthcare provider. There could be deeper issues requiring further investigation, such related to the spine or nerves. Ayurveda can be supportive in managing symptoms but doesn’t replace other necessary treatments.
