Aakansha
FREE

I have 4 cm of dermoid cyst in left ovary. Gynaecologist is advising to get it removed via surgery (they say it doesn't not dissolve on its own). My age is 25 and I am unmarried. Is there any ayurvedic treatment for the same and if yes, what is it. Please help.

Age: 25
Chronic illnesses: PCOD

Namaste Aakansha ji,

Dermoid cysts (ovarian teratomas) are a type of growth that may contain various tissues and are considered non-cancerous but complex. Ayurveda addresses such conditions under the framework of “Granthi” (cystic growths) and aims to balance hormonal imbalances, dissolve the cyst, and strengthen the reproductive system. While surgery may sometimes be necessary for large or complicated cysts, Ayurvedic chikitsa can help manage, reduce, or prevent further complications, especially given your young age and PCOD background.

Ayurvedic Chikitsa (Treatment Plan) 1. Herbal Formulations

Kanchanara Guggulu: Helps dissolve cysts and balance Kapha and Pitta dosha. Dosage: 2 tablets twice daily after meals with warm water. Varunadi Kashayam: Effective in clearing stagnation and reducing cystic growths. Dosage: 15 ml with 45 ml warm water twice daily before meals. Ashokarishta: Regulates menstrual cycles and strengthens the reproductive system. Dosage: 2 tbsp mixed with equal water after meals. Triphala Guggulu: Supports digestion, clears toxins, and helps in the gradual reduction of growths. Dosage: 1 tablet twice daily after meals with lukewarm water. 2. External Therapies

Abhyanga (Oil Massage): Use Castor Oil or Dhanvantaram Taila to gently massage the lower abdomen. Follow with a warm compress to improve circulation and reduce Kapha congestion. Basti (Medicated Enema): Tikta Ksheer Basti (bitter herbs with milk): Nourishes and detoxifies the reproductive tract. Requires guidance from a skilled Ayurvedic practitioner. 3. Dietary Guidelines

Do’s: Eat light, Kapha-reducing foods like warm soups, green vegetables, and whole grains. Include anti-inflammatory spices like turmeric, ginger, and cumin. Drink herbal teas like Punarnava or Cumin-Coriander-Fennel tea to reduce inflammation. Don’ts: Avoid cold, heavy, and Kapha-aggravating foods (dairy, sugar, fried items). Minimize processed and junk food. 4. Lifestyle and Yoga

Daily Routine: Follow a balanced lifestyle with proper sleep and stress management. Avoid prolonged sitting or inactivity to prevent stagnation in the pelvic region. Yoga and Pranayama: Practice Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose), Dhanurasana (Bow Pose), and Setu Bandhasana (Bridge Pose) to improve pelvic circulation. Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing) for hormonal balance. Prognosis and Precautions Dermoid cysts are structurally complex, and complete dissolution solely through Ayurveda might take 3-6 months of consistent treatment. Regular ultrasounds are necessary to monitor the size and ensure no complications like torsion or rupture. If the cyst shows no reduction or worsens in size, surgery may still be required, and Ayurvedic treatment can be continued post-surgery for faster recovery and prevention of recurrence. Consultation Advice It is essential to work with an experienced Ayurvedic practitioner to personalize the treatment and ensure safety.

Wishing you good health,

In Ayurveda, dermoid cysts are considered an imbalance in the Kapha dosha, leading to the accumulation of abnormal tissue or fluid in the ovaries. While surgery is commonly recommended in modern medicine for cysts that do not resolve on their own, Ayurveda offers natural methods that may help manage and reduce the size of cysts, especially when taken as part of a holistic treatment plan.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Dermoid Cyst: Herbal Remedies:

Ashoka: Known for its ability to support female reproductive health, reduce inflammation, and regulate the menstrual cycle. Shatavari: Helps balance hormones and supports ovarian health, potentially improving the function of the reproductive system. Turmeric: Has anti-inflammatory properties and may help reduce cyst size over time. Guggul: This resin is known for its detoxifying and anti-inflammatory properties and can be used to support the body’s ability to heal and balance tissue. Lodhra: A powerful herb in Ayurveda that helps balance Kapha and Pitta and is often used for female reproductive health issues, including cysts. Detoxification (Panchakarma):

A course of Panchakarma, under the guidance of an experienced Ayurvedic practitioner, can help eliminate toxins (Ama) from the body and balance the doshas, potentially helping to reduce cyst formation or growth. Udwarthana (dry massage) and Basti (medicated enemas) may be beneficial. Dietary Modifications:

Focus on a Pitta-calming, Kapha-reducing diet, which includes fresh, light foods such as leafy greens, fruits, and whole grains, while avoiding heavy, oily, and processed foods. Ghee is considered beneficial for nourishing the body and regulating hormones, so incorporate it in moderation into your diet. Herbal teas like ginger tea can help balance the digestive system and promote detoxification. Lifestyle Recommendations:

Regular physical activity such as yoga can help balance hormones, improve circulation to the reproductive organs, and reduce excess weight, which can exacerbate PCOD and cysts. Managing stress through practices like yoga, meditation, and pranayama can also help reduce hormonal imbalances contributing to cyst development. While Ayurvedic treatments may support overall reproductive health, it’s important to consult with both your gynecologist and an experienced Ayurvedic practitioner to determine the best course of action. If the cyst is causing significant symptoms or has the potential for complications, surgery may still be necessary. However, Ayurveda can complement your treatment by improving overall hormonal balance and promoting the health of your ovaries.

Dermoid cysts can be a bit tricky in the world of Ayurveda. They are often described as a growth that combines different tissues and, ya, it’s true—they don’t just dissolve away easily on their own. Ayurveda typically views these as kapha-related growths, and sometimes even involving a vata imbalance due to their solid nature.

While modern medicine often recommends surgery, Ayurveda focuses more on balancing the doshas and improving the body’s own way to manage the situation. But remember, some conditions require a closer partnership with allopathic medicine too—your safety and well-being come first!

In terms of Ayurvedic approach: strengthening digestion and boosting metabolism (agni) will be key. You might start with light detoxifying herbs like triphala (especially before bed, perhaps 1 teaspoon with warm water) to keep your intestines clean. Also, eating a kapha-pacifying diet might help, like reducing dairy, heavy, oily, and cold foods. Think warming spices; turmeric, cinnamon can be your friends here.

Practicing yoga asanas that stimulate the pelvic region, like Bhujangasana (cobra pose) or Sarvangasana (shoulder stand), could support your system too. They help with nadis and balancing vata. Pranayama like Anulom Vilom encourages better circulation and balance.

As far as lifestyle goes, staying warm and maintaining a regular routine is essential. Stress can aggravate your doshas, so take time for calming activities. But honestly, always work with your gynecologist’s plan! If they’re strongly advising surgery, it’s because they believe that’s the safest route.

Ayurveda is complementary care here, but don’t skip the primary medical advice from your gynaecologist. You could talk to an Ayurvedic physician near you, someone who can get into your unique prakriti and condition, and they might offer a detailed plan incorporating all these elements.

Whatever you choose, just be safe. Always good to keep all avenues open and work with professionals on both sides of the aisle!
