Rashmi Ranjan,

Vertigo, as you’ve described it, can be a challenging condition. In Ayurveda, we understand vertigo and dizziness primarily as imbalances in the Vata dosha, which governs movement, circulation, and sensory functions. Vertigo can be caused by various factors such as digestive issues, accumulation of toxins (ama), or disturbances in the inner ear (particularly the Vata and Kapha doshas), which lead to a sensation of spinning, dizziness, and lightheadedness.

To address vertigo and dizziness, we need a holistic approach that not only targets the symptoms but also focuses on correcting the root cause, which could involve balancing the doshas, improving digestion, detoxifying the body, and strengthening the nervous system.

Ayurvedic Approach to Vertigo: Balancing Vata and Kapha: Since vertigo is often linked to Vata imbalances, the first step in treatment is to balance Vata. This can be achieved through dietary changes, lifestyle modifications, and herbal remedies that calm Vata. Herbs: Brahmi and Ashwagandha are excellent for calming the mind and improving the strength of the nervous system. Shankhpushpi is another herb that can be useful in treating dizziness and enhancing mental clarity. Oil Application: Shirodhara (a treatment where warm oil is poured onto the forehead) with Brahmi oil or Anu Taila can be very helpful in calming Vata and promoting balance in the nervous system. Internal Detoxification: Since toxins (ama) may be contributing to the imbalance, an Ayurvedic detox or Panchakarma therapy may be beneficial. Triphala (a combination of three fruits—amalaki, bibhitaki, and haritaki) can be taken to help cleanse the digestive system and remove accumulated toxins, which often exacerbate vertigo symptoms. Dietary Recommendations: Warm, cooked foods: Opt for meals that are easy to digest, such as soups, stews, and porridges. Avoid cold, dry, or heavy foods that increase Vata. Hydration: Ensure proper hydration, but avoid excess caffeine or alcohol, as they can trigger imbalances in Vata and lead to further dizziness. Ginger: Including fresh ginger in your diet can be helpful as it has anti-inflammatory properties and helps balance the digestive system, which may be causing or contributing to your vertigo. Lifestyle and Daily Routine: Daily Abhyanga (oil massage): Massaging your body with warm sesame oil can help calm Vata, reduce tension, and improve circulation, which is essential in managing vertigo. Yoga and Pranayama: Specific yoga poses such as Tadasana (Mountain Pose) and Vrikshasana (Tree Pose) can help improve balance and strengthen the body. Breathing exercises like Anulom Vilom (alternate nostril breathing) are excellent for calming the nervous system and improving circulation to the brain. Adequate Rest: Ensure you are getting sufficient sleep and avoiding overexertion, as stress and fatigue can exacerbate symptoms of vertigo. Specific Herbal Formulations: Ashwagandha Churna: This herb helps in balancing Vata and reducing dizziness and lightheadedness. It strengthens the nervous system and helps with mental clarity. Brahmi Vati: This helps calm the mind and alleviate vertigo symptoms by supporting the nervous system and improving brain function. Kanchanar Guggulu: If there is an issue with excess mucus (Kapha), this can help clear it and reduce dizziness linked to this imbalance. Duration and Follow-Up: A permanent cure is possible with consistent treatment, but it requires dedication to a proper Ayurvedic regimen. Vertigo may take some time to resolve, typically within 2-3 months of continuous Ayurvedic treatment and lifestyle changes, though improvements should be noticeable within a few weeks.

Final Thought: It’s important to remember that Ayurveda focuses on treating the root cause of the condition, so patience and adherence to the prescribed therapies are crucial. I recommend consulting with an Ayurvedic practitioner for a personalized treatment plan, as individual constitutions (Prakriti) and imbalances (Vikriti) need to be considered for the best approach.

I wish you a speedy recovery and encourage you to embrace this holistic approach for long-lasting relief.

Vertigo can be pretty unsettling with all that spinning and dizziness. But hey, Ayurveda might have some goodies to help ya out. Now first, guess we gotta look at what might be causing it. Ayurveda often ties vertigo to a Vata imbalance – think of Vata as wind in your body. When it goes wonky you can feel like you’re on a constant merry-go-round.

Start with your diet! Stick to warm, cooked meals, and favor oily and sour tastes. Soups, stews, and things like ghee and sesame oil are your besties here. Oh, and avoid cold, raw, or dry foods.

Stress can turn Vata into a real monster, so do something relaxing like yoga or meditation. Going for a daily walk could help ya stay grounded too. Try to maintain a regular sleep schedule, going to bed at the same time every night might help to balance things out.

There’s a herb, Brahmi, that’s quite known for calming down the nerves. A teaspoon of Brahmi powder with warm water once a day can be nourishing. But, hey, it’s always good to check with a local herbalist to see what’s right for your particular constitution.

Nasya, or nasal oiling, is something else you might wanna try. A few drops of warm sesame oil in each nostril daily can help pacify Vata. Just be gentle, no one wants oil in the eyes right?

Now, I gotta say, since it’s been going on for 6 months, make sure a doctor checks it out too to rule any serious stuff. If possible, see an Ayurvedic doctor in your area who could give a more hands-on advice and check for any other underlying issues.

Remember, consistency is key when it comes to Ayurvedic treatment, it’s not a quick fix but over time it can work wonders. Wishing you steady days ahead!
