can we eat curd in kidney stone - #25648

Anna

I am really worried about my recent kidney stone diagnosis. When I went to the doctor, they said I need to modify my diet, and I feel kinda lost about it. I've been hearing mixed stuff from friends about what to eat and what to avoid. My doc told me to drink more fluids and cut down on oxalate-rich foods. But here’s the thing: I love curd, like, I could eat it every single day! But now I’m not sure if can we eat curd in kidney stone situations? I've read online that some people say it’s okay, while others say it’s a no-no. Is curd considered bad for kidney stones, or can we eat curd in moderation? I'm worried it might worsen my situation since I wanna avoid more stones at all costs, LOL! I don't want all these healthy changes to feel torturous, you know? Would appreciate any thoughts or personal experiences! Thanks!

Kidney stones can indeed require dietary modifications, and deciding whether to include curd involves understanding your specific condition and constitution according to Ayurveda. Curd, being a fermented dairy product, has both beneficial and potentially unfavorable effects depending on individual digestive capacity, or ‘agni’, and dosha imbalances.

Curd is generally considered heavy and sour, and in Ayurveda it is known to potentially increase ‘kapha’ and ‘pitta’, which might not be ideal if you are prone to kidney stones. The increase in pitta dosha can aggravate conditions where inflammation is a concern. If your kidney stones are specifically calcium oxalate, you might be cautious with dairy products. Curd is rich in calcium and some oxalate, but the binding of calcium with oxalate within the gut may actually reduce overall oxalate absorption into the bloodstream, which could be beneficial.

However, moderation is key. It’s often viable to consume curd in small amounts, preferably during lunchtime when digestive fire is strongest, instead of at dinner. You can also add cumin or coriander seeds to curd to boost digestion and avoid any kapha aggravation.

Furthermore, hydration is essential. Alongside reducing overall oxalate intake from other foods, you should aim to drink plenty of water through the day, which can help flush out toxins and prevent stone formation. Aside from diet, pay attention to your physical activity as well, maintaining an active lifestyle aids in balancing the doshas and enhancing metabolism.

For a more personalized plan, considering factors like your dosha type and overall constitution, an Ayurvedic practitioner can give a detailed assessment. They can also help you explore herbal remedies or Panchakarma therapies if deemed appropriate.

Most importantly, if your medical doctor has other specific dietary restrictions or recommendations for you, those should take precedence, since kidney stone types and conditions can vary significantly among individuals.
