Seeking Ayurvedic Remedies for Post-Surgery Leg Pain and Skin Changes - #38417
After my mum had hip surgery after 1 year, her right calf and ankle experience pain. On the outside of the right ankle a 2cm dark circle has developed on the skin. She says it feels heavy all the time and can't feel her leg. Making it difficult for her to walk and causing mobility issues. Can you recommend a recovery ayurveda remedy to make her leg pain go away please. I'm not sure if it's the nerves or something else. Thank you

The symptoms your mother is experiencing after hip surgery could be attributed to a few Ayurvedic factors, like Vata imbalance affecting the nerves and circulation. It’s important first to seek a professional medical evaluation to rule out any critical issues like deep vein thrombosis or nerve damage. However, alongside this, certain Ayurvedic practices might provide some relief.
A gentle Abhyanga (oil massage) using warm sesame oil or Mahanarayan oil could help improve circulation and reduce pain in the leg. Warm the oil slightly and massage the affected area for about 15-20 minutes daily; follow this with a warm compress to enhance absorption. This can help in balancing the Vata dosha, which might relieve some pain and heaviness.
Dietary interventions should focus on soothing Vata. Include warm, cooked, and wholesome foods such as soups, stews, and porridges, and avoid cold, dry foods. Use spices like ginger, turmeric, and cinnamon that heat and promote internal circulation. Ensure adequate hydration and include foods rich in good fats, like ghee, to nourish the tissues.
Yoga postures such as Pawanmuktasana (Wind Relieving Pose) and Tadasana (Mountain Pose) can subtly stimulate circulation, but she should practice these under guidance if she’s stable enough post-surgery.
Basti (medicated enema) therapy can also be effective for conditions involving Vata. It must be done under a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner’s supervision for safety.
If numbness continues and sensations do not improve, it’s crucial to consult a healthcare professional because further diagnostic assessments might be necessary to prevent complications.
The symptoms you’re describing suggest a possible imbalance in the Vata dosha, which controls movement and nerve function in the body. It might also relate to circulation issues from the surgery. Given the persistent pain and numbness, it’s important to consult a medical professional to rule out any serious complications such as nerve damage or circulation problems.
For an Ayurvedic approach, focus on balancing Vata. A daily massage (abhyanga) with warm sesame oil on the legs can be soothing and improve circulation. Massage gently towards the heart and aim for consistency, doing this each morning or evening.
Diet is also crucial; ensure her meals are warm, moist, and Vata-pacifying. Consider preparing dishes with ghee, cooked vegetables, legumes, and whole grains such as rice or quinoa. Herbs like ashwagandha and haritaki, taken under the guidance of an Ayurvedic practitioner, might also help support nervous system balance.
To manage the skin discoloration, apply a paste of turmeric (a natural anti-inflammatory), mixed with a little honey and sandalwood powder, on the affected area daily for about 15 minutes before washing off. While it may not cure the discoloration, it might aid in improving the skin texture and inflammation.
Encourage gentle movement like walking or mild stretching (as recommended by her doctor or physiotherapist) to promote circulation and prevent further stiffness. Ensure she stays hydrated throughout the day to keep her dhatus (tissues) nourished.
If these remedies don’t help, or symptoms worsen, prompt medical attention is essential to exclude potential complications. Keep her comfort and safety as the top priorities while exploring these Ayurvedic options. Balancing current treatments with Ayurvedic care can offer a holistic path to recovery.
