Chronic anxiety in the Siddha-Ayurvedic tradition is often linked to an imbalance in the Vata dosha. Vata, responsible for movement and nervous system functions, can become aggravated due to stress, irregular lifestyle, or improper diet. To restore balance, consider integrating several lifestyle and dietary adjustments.
Begin with your daily routine; establish a consistent schedule for waking, eating, and sleeping. Regularity calms Vata energy. Dietary changes mean favoring warm, cooked foods with sweet, sour, and salty tastes. Ensure meals are nourishing and grounding, avoid raw and cold foods which can increase Vata imbalance.
Include herbal formulations such as Ashwagandha, known as Withania somnifera, which calms the nervous system. A recommended dosage would be 500 mg of Ashwagandha with a cup of warm milk in the morning and bedtime. Brahmi, or Bacopa monnieri, can also enhance mental clarity and relaxation. Mix 1/4 teaspoon of Brahmi powder in warm water, consuming it daily after meals.
For your mind and energy flow, practice yoga and pranayama daily. Gentle postures like forward bends and twists can ease anxiety. Practice Nadi Shodhana, alternate nostril breathing, for 10 minutes each day to balance the energy channels while promoting mental calm.
When anxiety is elevated, apply soothing oils like sesame or almond oil for an abhyanga (self-massage). This daily practice is grounding and supportive to Vata. Due to its serious nature, ongoing monitoring by healthcare professionals is important alongside these Ayurvedic practices to ensure a holistic and safe approach to managing chronic anxiety.
