Why Do I Experience Heartburn and Bloating After Eating Leeks? - #50026

Client_153bf1

It seems I get bad heartburn and bloating everytime I eat leeks (well cooked with ghee). Why ? For information, I have a very weak and slow digestive system, have a bad tongue coating and am almost always bloated and constipated. I frequently have heartburn with various foods, herbs or spices but am not sure who the culprits are exactly, I just know I don't do well with leeks. Garlic is tough as well but cooked onions are usually ok. I currently don't eat any grains nor legumes as I don't digest them well either - just vegetables and meats, and sometimes a cooked apple with cinnamon between meals. Thank you for your help.

How long have you been experiencing these digestive issues?:

- More than 6 months

Do you notice any specific foods that trigger your heartburn more than others?:

- Not sure

How would you describe your overall appetite?:

- Good, but sometimes irregular

Hello Thanks for laying out your symptoms so clearly. It’s really helpful that you noticed leeks and garlic make your heartburn and bloating worse – that tells us a lot about where things are off-balance in your digestion. YOUR CONCERN – Bad heartburn – Constant bloating – Constipation – Tongue has a thick coating – Digestion is slow and weak – Can’t handle leeks, garlic, grains, or legumes – This has been going on for 6+ months What Ayurveda Says: It looks like you’ve got a classic case of: Weak digestion + toxins from fermentation + acid moving upwards Leeks and garlic are in the Allium family: – They’re heating – Strong – Cause fermentation – Full of sulfur So, if someone has: – Weak digestion – Toxins in their gut – Slow digestion Those veggies can cause: – Fast fermentation – Gas – Acid being pushed up Which leads to: – Heartburn – Pressure in your chest – Bloating – Burning in your throat Onions are milder, so you’re okay with those. Leeks and garlic are stronger, so you react. What We Want to Accomplish: – Get rid of those toxins – Boost your digestion – Calm the acid reflux – Heal your gut – Get your bowels moving normally Treatment Plan INTERNAL MEDICATION 1.Avipattikar Churna ½ tsp At night with water Calms acid
2. Hingwashtak Churna ½ tsp Before you eat Helps digest gas
3. Triphala 1 tsp At night
Clears constipation/toxins 4.Shatavari powder ½ tsp With warm milk
Soothes the burning

HOME REMEDIES – Before eating: ½ tsp fresh ginger juice with a pinch of salt – After eating: Drink jeera tea DIET PLAN ❌AVOID – Leeks – Garlic – Raw veggies – Fermented stuff – Vinegar –Tomato – Chili – Coffee ✅INCLUDE – Rice – Mung dal –Cooked pumpkin – Bottle gourd – Ash gourd – Cooked apple –Ghee – Bone broth Only eat small amounts at each meal. Your body isn’t weak, it’s just inflamed and things are fermenting inside. Leeks aren’t evil, but your digestion can’t handle them right now. Once your gut heals, you’ll be able to tolerate more foods Warm Regards Dr. Snehal Vidhate

-Leeks are very high in fructans. In someone with slow digestion, bloating, and constipation, fructans ferment easily in the gut → produce gas → increase abdominal pressure → trigger heartburn and bloating. Since garlic also bothers you (and onions are only tolerated when well cooked), this suggests a fructan sensitivity. - so right now just avoid it and after some time start very less like weekly once or twice . -Rx Hingwashtak churna ½ tsp with first bite of lunch & dinner Avipattikar churna ½ tsp at bedtime Triphala churna 1 tsp at bedtime (adjust for soft daily stool) - Advice Avoid leeks, garlic, raw onion. Warm, well-cooked light meals. Ginger tea before meals. Early, light dinner.

Leeks and garlic are heavy, gas-forming, and heating foods. If digestion is weak, they can cause: Heartburn Bloating Constipation Tongue coating (sign of poor digestion / “Ama” in Ayurveda) Cooked onion is easier to digest, so you tolerate it better. Ayurvedic Treatment Trikatu Churna A pinch with honey before meals (improves digestion) Hing (Asafoetida) Add small pinch in cooking (reduces gas) Haritaki Powder 1 teaspoon with warm water at bedtime (helps constipation) Diet Eat warm, freshly cooked food Use ginger in cooking Drink warm water or ginger tea Avoid Leeks and excess garlic (if causing symptoms) Raw vegetables Cold food or drinks Overeating

✓Why leeks trigger you strongly Raw/cooked leeks are high in inulin & sulfur compounds → ferment fast in weak digestion → lots of gas + heat rising → heartburn Your baseline is already bloated/constipated → any extra gas-producing food overloads the system Cooked onions are better tolerated because they are sweeter/milder after cooking (less fructans remain) ✓What to do right now Stop leeks completely (and limit other strong Alliums like garlic/raw onion for 4–6 weeks) ✓Core remedies (start today) Hingwashtak Churna — ½–1 tsp after every meal with warm water (fastest gas & bloating relief, safe daily) Avipattikar Churna — 3 gm at bedtime with warm water (excellent for heartburn + reflux) Bilvadi Churna or Bilva pulp powder — 3 gm twice daily with warm water (stops loose/ sticky stool, heals gut lining) Triphala — 2–3 gm night (gentle, not strong purgative — clears Ama without aggravating Vata) ✓Diet for next 4–6 weeks (very light & low-fermentable) Main food: thin moong dal khichdi + 1–2 tsp ghee + rock salt + roasted cumin Vegetables: only well-cooked bottle gourd (lauki), pumpkin, carrot (small amounts) Fruits: only pomegranate, ripe banana (small), stewed apple with cinnamon Drinks: warm cumin-coriander-fennel water sip all day (2–2.5 L) ✓Avoid completely: all Alliums (leeks, garlic, onion = even cooked for now), broccoli/cauliflower, beans, grains (you already avoid), raw food, cold drinks ✓Daily habits Vajrasana 10 min after every meal (reduces gas trapping) Warm sesame oil gentle abdominal massage clockwise 5–10 min at night → hot water bag No lying down for 2 hours after eating Dinner before 7 pm Dr Gursimran Jeet Singh MD Panchakarma
