Pain in the upper left side of my right wrist - #26688

Barnali B

I have a pain in the upper left side of the right wrist. I was told it is a possible nerve issue and not a bone problem. sometime the pain radiates upwards due to hand usage.I just woke with this pain one morning and it was not that it came gradually. I do work on computer quite a bit.

Pain in the wrist, especially if related to nerve issues, suggests an imbalance possibly tied to Vata dosha, which governs movement and nerve impulses in the body. Working on a computer for long hours can exacerbate this imbalance due to repetitive strain and awkward positioning — all factors that increase Vata.

Firstly, consider taking short breaks regularly — every 30 minutes of computer work, pause for 5-minute hand and wrist stretches. Simple wrist rotations and finger stretching can help counteract tension. Warm oil massage using sesame oil, an excellent Vata pacifier, applied gently to the wrists can provide relief. It allows warmth to penetrate, easing the Vata-induced tension.

Diet supports Vata balancing too. Ensure your meals are lukewarm, nourishing and moist. Include foods like warm milk with a pinch of turmeric, which acts as an anti-inflammatory in Ayurveda. Hydration is also key; aim to drink warm, herbal teas like ginger or licorice, which can further soothe Vata.

When it comes to the seating posture, ensure your computer setup ergonomically supports your wrists; a perpendicular angle at elbows and adjustable chair height is essential. Avoid cold or damp environments as they aggravate Vata.

If pain persists or worsens, it might be worth seeking Ayurvedic consultations where specific Panchakarma therapies can be considered for nerve-related issues. Until then, these recommendations should help manage your symptoms gently, keeping Vata dosha in check.

Pain in the upper left side of the right wrist, especially if sudden and radiating upwards, can indeed be indicative of a nerve-related issue, like repetitive strain injury often linked to computer work. Classical Siddha-Ayurvedic principles suggest it may result from an imbalance in the Vata dosha, which governs movement and nerve functions.

First, consider gentle wrist exercises to encourage proper circulation and alleviation of nerve pressure. Rotate your wrist in both directions for about 5 minutes daily. Be careful to avoid movements or actions that exacerbate the pain. Balancing Vata is crucial, so applying a warm sesame oil massage to the affected area can be helpful. Sesame oil possesses heating properties that can calm Vata and provide relief.

Internally, herbs like Ashwagandha and Brahmi can harmonize nervous system function. A teaspoon of Ashwagandha powder in warm milk at night may fortify tissues. Brahmi can be taken as a supplement or infused tea. Ensure to drink adequate water and support digestion with a diet that is warm, nourishing, and unctuous. Include foods such as cooked vegetables, whole grains, and nuts.

Evaluate your workstation ergonomics to prevent strain. Adjust keyboard height and use wrist support if needed. If your pain persists or worsens, seek evaluation by a healthcare professional who can rule out compression syndromes or other nerve pathologies. Immediate medical attention is essential if symptoms impact daily function or involve swelling, as these signs might indicate a deeper issue needing thorough examination.
