First, avoid peppermint tea. Contrary to popular belief, it can sometimes relax the lower esophageal sphincter, potentially worsening acidity. Instead, try drinking a cup of warm cumin water. To prepare it, boil a teaspoon of cumin seeds in a cup of water, strain, and drink it slowly after meals. Cumin helps pacify the pitta dosha and supports digestion.
Another remedy is to consume a small piece of jaggery after meals. It not only refreshes the palate but also aids digestion by enhancing agni, the digestive fire, in a balanced manner. Ensure it’s consumed in moderation due to its high sugar content.
Modify your diet by incorporating cooling foods such as cucumber, melons, and coconut water. These can mitigate the heat of excess pitta and calm acidity. Foods to avoid would be fried, spicy, and sour items, as well as processed foods.
Paying attention to meal timing is also beneficial. Eat meals at the same time every day, ensuring they aren’t too late in the evening. This helps regulate digestion and reduce acidity.
Practice deep breathing exercises or yoga asanas to manage stress. Specific asanas like Vajrasana (thunderbolt pose) post-meal can bolster digestion. Stress is a notorious pitta aggravator, so any stress-reducing activity can be quite beneficial.
Remember, persistence and consistency are key. If symptoms persist or worsen, it’s crucial to consult an Ayurvedic practitioner or healthcare provider to rule out more serious conditions. Acidity, while common, shouldn’t be ignored if it’s chronic and painful.
