what is the dengue symptoms - #38474

Ava

I am really worried right now because my friend just got diagnosed with dengue, and I feel like I should know more about this. Like, what is the dengue symptoms exactly? She started getting these weird flu-like feelings, and then it just got worse. First, it was headaches and then a bad fever, but now she’s saying her whole body hurts and she’s super tired all the time — like, how can someone be that tired just from a fever? I’m freaking out because it sounds pretty serious. I also heard something about skin rashes but I’m not sure if that’s part of what is the dengue symptoms too. And then there’s this thing about bleeding gums or something, right? I know she had a sore throat before all this, but I guess that could’ve just been something else… Anyway, she’s been resting and drinking fluids, but am I just being paranoid? How serious is this? Should I be looking out for any other signs or symptoms? I’ve read some stuff online, but does anybody here have real experience or insider knowledge about what is the dengue symptoms that I should keep an eye on? Would love any advice or info, thanks!

Dengue symptoms can indeed be quite concerning, especially since they can mimic other illnesses and vary in severity. The onset starts typically with fever, often rising suddenly, accompanied by headaches, especially behind the eyes, muscle, and joint pains. This is why dengue is sometimes called “breakbone fever”. The body aches and extreme fatigue you mentioned are very common, and yes, they can be quite debilitating.

As your friend mentioned experiencing skin rashes, this is indeed another symptom associated with dengue, usually appearing 2-5 days after the fever begins. The rash often starts as red spots and can spread across the body, causing itchiness. Bleeding manifestations like bleeding gums and nosebleeds can happen too, due to the low platelet count that occurs during a dengue infection, but is more severe and urgent.

Since dengue fever can progress to a more severe form called dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome, where dehydration becomes a risk, it’s crucial to monitor for symptoms like severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, rapid breathing, blood in vomit, or stool, and severe bleeding. These symptoms require immediate medical attention.

Your friend is doing well by resting and maintaining hydration, which is essential. Fresh home-cooked meals that are easy to digest are advisable. Food like khichdi or soups can be nourishing without straining the body, and herbal teas like tulsi or ginger can help support recovery. However, it’s important she’s been reviewed by a health care provider regularly to monitor her condition, especially the platelet count. Rest and hydration are primary, but constant vigilance is key till she starts improving.

As a friend, stay supportive and encourage her to follow medical advice. If you notice any worrying symptoms, especially those leaning toward severe disease, seek medical attention promptly. Staying informed but calm and alert is vital in times like these.
