what are the causes of dengue - #37445
I am super worried right now because I recently got back from a trip to a tropical area, and a couple of days later, I started feeling really tired with crazy headaches and these random joint pains. I thought it was just jet lag, but then my friend mentioned something about dengue, which freaked me out! I couldn’t shake the feeling that I might be sick, so I went to the doctor and had some tests done. They said my white blood cell count was low, and now I can’t stop thinking — what are the causes of dengue? Like, I know mosquito bites are involved, but is there more?? I mean, I went to this beautiful place, but there were definitely standing water around, you know? I never saw any warnings about dengue. Could something else cause dengue infections, or is it really only mosquitoes? I guess I'm just trying to figure out if I did something wrong or if there was a way to prevent this. It’s all so confusing! If anyone has insight on what are the causes of dengue or how to stay safe in the future, it would mean a lot to me! Thanks!

Dengue is a viral infection primarily transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, so you’re right in linking it to mosquito bites. The virus is not transmitted from person to person directly, which means human-to-human contact will not spread the disease. Regarding your confusion, the mosquito becomes infected with the dengue virus when it bites a person already infected with the virus. After an incubation period in the mosquito, the virus can be transmitted to other humans through its bite.
The presence of standing water is a significant risk factor because it’s the major breeding ground for these mosquitoes. They thrive in tropical and subtropical climates, laying their eggs in places with stagnant water, like water containers, plant trays, and discarded tires. So, being in an area with standing water increases the potential for exposure.
Preventing dengue primarily revolves around minimizing mosquito bites and controlling mosquito populations. To stay safe in the future, ensure you’re in an environment with reduced mosquito breeding sites. Use insect repellents, wear long-sleeved clothing especially during early morning and late afternoon when these mosquitoes are most active. Sleeping under a mosquito net can also help. Applying such preventive measures, especially in tropical areas, can lower the risk.
Your experience does not suggest any wrongdoing on your part. Dengue risks can be mitigated, but exposure is often beyond one’s control, particularly in endemic areas. Public health measures often focus on community-wide mosquito control to combat the root cause. Given your current symptoms and test results, follow your doctor’s advice closely to monitor and manage your condition. Seek immediate medical help if severe symptoms occur and remember, recovery largely depends on managing symptoms and supportive care.
