Recurring sinus issues post-surgery, especially with polyp growth, indicate a potential imbalance in the Kapha and Vata doshas. This imbalance can lead to excess mucus production and inflammation, common in sinus-related problems. Begin by considering some dietary and lifestyle adjustments to manage these doshas. Reducing Kapha can be achieved by avoiding cold, heavy, and oily foods, like dairy, and instead opting for warming spices such as ginger, turmeric, and black pepper, which improve digestion and reduce mucus.
Turmeric milk, made with warm milk and a pinch of turmeric, taken at night can help reduce congestion. Use steam inhalation with a few drops of eucalyptus oil to open nasal passages and relieve headaches; do this once or twice daily. Additionally, jal neti, a saline nasal rinse, can cleanse the nasal passage, but ensure it’s done correctly under guidance if you’re unfamiliar with the practice.
Trikatu churna, an herbal formulation, can help improve respiratory health and digest accumulated mucus when taken with honey, about 1/4 teaspoon after meals. Try reducing sugar and fermented foods as they may increase Kapha. Strengthening Agni or digestive fire is crucial, so include cooked foods over raw to support digestion.
Getting enough sleep and reducing stress is vital too, as Vata imbalance can exacerbate symptoms. Practise regular, gentle yoga and pranayama, like anulom vilom or alternate nostril breathing, which can regulate your breath and balance the nervous system.
If symptoms persist or worsen, it is essential to consult with an ENT specialist promptly. Ayurveda can complement medical treatments but should not replace necessary medical interventions, especially in chronic or severe conditions like recurring polyps.
