Morning cough - #18908

5 minutes after I wake up and get up from the bed, I start coughing with thin white phlegm. It only lasts for about a minute or two. Doctors say it's an allergic cough and I know I am allergic to dust mite. What could be a solution. I have tried all the three Allopathic, Ayurbed and homeopathic medicine and also had all kinds of tests but in vein. I await your best solution.

Age: 64
Chronic illnesses: No disease at all but this allergic cough is chronic for more than 4 years.

Your morning cough situation sounds pretty frustrating and it’s clearly been a journey for you. In Ayurveda, we often look at the root cause rather than just the symptoms. So, let’s dive in with some insights I think might help.

In Ayurvedic terms, this might be linked to an imbalance in Kapha dosha. The thin white phlegm is a classic kapha sign. Our aim here is to help balance this dosha which seems to be vitiated. Considering your allergy to dust mites, it’s important to minimize your exposure to them, as it could be triggering this cough right after you wake up. That’s a practical step in managing the external factor.

Let’s talk about a morning ritual. Start your day by drinking warm water with a pinch of turmeric and a bit of black pepper. This can help reduce kapha and also act as a gentle stimulant. Turmeric is great for reducing mucus. Make sure the water is comfortably warm, not hot, to avoid pitta imbalance.

Include some Pranayama, specifically Anulom Vilom or Kapalbhati breathing exercises. Yogic breathing can help strengthen your respiratory system, and it might bring some relief over time if done regularly, at least 10 minutes a day.

Diet is key too. Try to avoid dairy products in the evening, since they can increase mucus production. Opt for warm, light meals that are easier to digest. Including spices like ginger, cinnamon and holy basil in your diet might also prove beneficial. They all work wonders in managing respiratory issues and balancing kapha.

It’s also important to keep your sleeping environment clean and dust-free, which you’re probably already doing. Use washable pillow covers and regularly wash your bed covers in warm water.
