How to treat biliary atresia in 1year child? - #21444

Myself chaithaya and I'm a homemaker. My son is suffering from biliary atresia bybirth. After lot of doctor consultations. He had undergone "Kasai procedure" at his 45th day. As doctors said, postkasai jaundice will undergo completely in many cases but in few cases there will be a chance for Liver transplation..... In my son case,Post kasai gradually jaundice was decreased but after 5-6th month again the jaundice value is increased from 5 to 11 and again it is decreased to 8 by his first birthday. Currently we are giving a syrup called "udimarin" 4ml morning and evening after feed. Can you please tell me is there any chance in ayurveda to cure bilary atresia (jaundice, spleen enlargement and liver cirrhosis) without liver transplant.

Biliary atresia is definitely a complex and serious condition, especially in lil’ ones. It’s great you’ve gotten your son the Kasai procedure – it’s a crucial first step. But, yeah, post-surgery, the fluctuations in jaundice levels can be nerve-wracking for sure. While Ayurveda offers support for liver health, this is a case where you should be continuing to work closely with your medical doc.

In Ayurveda, much emphasis is placed on balancing the doshas and strengthening the agni – the digestive fire – which can be disrupted in liver-related conditions. Maintaining liver health is pivotal here, but remember, for biliary atresia, modern medicine often remains the cornerstone. You could however, integrate some gentle Ayurvedic approaches to support the liver.

Diet is significant. Focus on giving foods that are easy to digest and won’t put extra load on the liver – think kitchari, a mix of mung dal and rice, which is simple yet nourishing. Avoid foods that are heavy, oily, very sweet or salty. Keep hydration high with lots of lukewarm water and herbal teas like coriander seed tea which may help.

Herbal ayurvedic formulations such as ‘Kalmegh’ (Andrographis paniculata) are known for liver-protective properties, though it’s crucial to work with an experienced Ayurvedic practitioner to tailor a blend that’s safe for your child. But always consult the pediatric gastroenterologist before adding any new treatments or herbs.

Gentle abdominal massage with warm sesame oil can aid in supporting the spleen and liver. With cirrhosis or spleen enlargement present though, it’s essential to be cautious - so very light pressure if at all.

Rest and avoiding exposure to infections – since liver’s pivotal in fighting off infections – is also key. Keep up with vaccines and regular medical follow-ups diligently.

Transplants are a serious topic, and your doc’s words should weigh heavily here. Ayurveda can definitely complement treatment and potentially ease symptoms like jaundice, but as an addition rather than a replacement. Keep brave, inform every step and be relentless in advocating for your lil’ one’s health amidst all this, you’re doing amazing by staying proactive!
