How to help my dad strengthen his bones and get nutrients with small meals after stomach surgery? - #53813

Your father’s condition is understandable given his history. The stomach surgery (likely bariatric) has reduced his ability to absorb nutrients, which is why he now has weak bones, muscle pain, and fatigue. Ayurveda can help, but this is a case where nutrition and absorption are the main focus. From an Ayurvedic view, this is mainly Vata aggravation (degeneration, pain, weakness) Asthi dhatu kshaya (bone tissue depletion) Agni manda (weak digestion and absorption) Ashwagandha churna 5 grams with warm milk once daily at night For strength, muscle and bone nourishment Shatavari churna 3 grams with milk in morning For nourishment and tissue building Lakshadi Guggulu 2 tablets twice daily after food For bone strength and healing Praval Pishti 250 mg twice daily with honey or ghee Natural calcium support Guduchi satva 500 mg twice daily For immunity and inflammation Dashmoolarishta 15 ml with equal water after lunch and dinner For Vata and body pain If digestion is very weak Hingvastak churna 1 gram before meals with ghee External therapies Daily oil massage with Mahanarayana taila or Dhanwantharam taila Followed by warm bath This reduces pain and improves strength If possible Basti therapy (medicated enema) is very important for Vata and bone health, under supervision Diet for high nutrition in small portions Because he cannot eat large quantities, give dense and easily digestible foods Warm milk with ghee and a pinch of turmeric daily Ragi porridge (rich in calcium) Black sesame seeds powder 1 teaspoon daily Soaked almonds 5 to 10 daily Moong dal soup with ghee Bone broth or vegetable mineral broth Rice with ghee and soft cooked vegetables Dates and figs in small quantity Avoid Dry food, junk food, excess raw food Cold drinks and refrigerated items Excess tea and coffee

Hello, For someone with post stomach surgery malabsorption, likely low bone density, chronic body pain, and metabolic history, Ayurvedic support should focus o digestion, bone tissue nourishment, vata pacification(pain/dryness) and rejuvenation- while keepiing meals small, dense in nutrition, and easy to absorb. Also, his sense of purpose while working the land is meaningful- Ayurveda considers this supportive for mental well being Treatment plan 1) For bone strength and joint support -Gandha taila capsules= 1 cap twice daily after meals =classic support traditionally used for bones, joints, and tissue nourishment -Maharasnadi kashayam tablets= 2 tab twice daily after meals =for chronic body pain, vata imbalance, stiffness 2) For digestion and nutrient absorption very important after stomach surgery -Dashmoolarishtam= 15ml + equal water twice daily after meals =traditionally used to support recovery, strength and digestion -Chywanprasha= 1 tsp in morning start with 1/2 tsp =nutrient dense Small nutrient dense foods easy to absorb use small frequent meals 5-6 mini meals -warm moong dal soup with ghee -sesame paste/tahini excellent traditional support for bones -soft stewed dates, soaked almonds, black rasins -bone broth if non vegetarian -soft khichdi with ghee and moringa leaves -ragi porridge -very rich in calcium -homemade electrolyte hydration= coconut water if allowed, or lightly salted rice water External pain support -Dhanwantaram taila warm oil masaage for pain, stiffnes, vata calming For mood/depression support -Brahmi capsule= 1 cap at bedtime may support calm and mental clarity Do follow Hope this might be helpful Thank you

In ayurveda , your condition is viewed as disruption of digestive fire and tissue specific metabolism leading to accumulation of vata’ ( causing pain and dryness )and depletion of bone tissue . take the prescribed medications consistently you will see results soon . *DOS - drink only warm water take 5-6 tiny meals nutrient rich rather than 3 large ones moong bean soup( kichadi )- best for malabsorption spend 15 min in sun do gentle excersise to keep synovial fluid moving

*DONTS - avoid dry food like popcorn dry toast crakers , take caffeine in limit , no raw salads or veggies they are hard to digest - steam or saute avoid night cold air add cumin water in routiene # dont start all the supplements on same day start with mustharistam for 3 days then add gt capsule

this is due to disruption of Agni (metabolic fire) and site of weakness in the Asthi Dhatu (bone tissue), further complicated by Vata Vyadhi (Vata-related disorders) due to the depletion of bodily tissues (Dhatu Kshaya). 👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇 1) Gandha thailam capsule- 1 capsule twice daily before food 2) ksheerabala 101 avarti- 5 to 10 drops With warm milk and bedtime 3) Dhanwantaram kwath- 15 ml with 45 ml lukewarm water twice daily 30 minute before food 4) Dadimadi ghritam- 1 teaspoon early morning before anything 5) kottamchukkadi thailam- apply warm over painful joint 👇👇👇👇👇👇👇 Stick to 5-6 very small means rather than three large meal Include Ragi, seaseme seeds moringa in your diet use protein like moong dal soup, goat milk Drink warm water throughout the day avoid drinking large amount of water during meals Use small amount of cow ghee in your daily food 15 to 20 minutes of morning sunlight Continue the farm activity to help with depression but also add 10 minutes of Pranayam daily

Hello, It is truly inspiring that your father has maintained his sobriety for a year and a half after decades of smoking and drinking. That takes incredible mental strength. It is also very telling that his pain vanishes when he is working on the farm; in Ayurveda, we call this Prana (life force) being directed toward a purpose, which can often override physical discomfort. However, his history of gastric surgery (likely a gastric bypass or sleeve) means he is dealing with Vata imbalance. In Ayurveda, when the stomach is reduced, the “seat of digestion” is disturbed, leading to Dhatu Kshaya (tissue depletion), specifically affecting Asthi (bone tissue). The Ayurvedic View: “Asthi Dhatu” Because he cannot absorb nutrients well, his “Agni” (digestive fire) is weak. In Ayurveda, bones are the site of Vata. When the body is malnourished, Vata increases, making bones brittle and causing the “body aches” he feels. To fix the bones, we must nourish the Medas (fatty tissue) and Asthi (bone) while keeping his digestion light. 1. Gandha Thailam (Capsules) Purpose: This is the premier traditional formula for bone strength, ligament tears (like his shoulder tendons), and bone density. Dose: 1 capsule twice daily, about 30 minutes before breakfast and dinner with warm water. 2. Dhanwantharam Pills Purpose: Specifically for Vata disorders affecting the musculoskeletal system and nervous system (good for his “body aches”). Dose: 1 pill twice daily after food. 3. Ashwagandharishtam Purpose: A fermented liquid that aids mineral absorption, strengthens bones, and helps with his history of depression and fatigue. Dose: 15–20 ml mixed with an equal amount of lukewarm water, twice daily after meals. 4. Ksheerabala Thailam (For External Application) Purpose: Since he has trouble absorbing nutrients orally, “feeding” the body through the skin is vital. Usage: Massage this warm oil over his joints and back before a warm bath. It nourishes the nerves and bones directly. Nutrient-Dense, Small Meals (Ayurvedic Style) Since he has a small stomach capacity, he needs “Liquid Gold” nutrition that doesn’t require heavy lifting from his digestive tract. In Ayurveda, this is considered the best for bone repair. Have him sip small amounts (100ml) throughout the day. It is rich in collagen and minerals. Ghee is the best vehicle for nutrients. Adding a teaspoon of plain Ghee to every small meal will help lubricate his joints and provide fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) that he likely lacks. A very thin, soupy mix of yellow mung beans and white basmati rice with ginger and cumin. It is “pre-digested” nutrition. Ragi is the highest herbal source of calcium. Prepare it as a thin, warm drink with a little jaggery or stevia. Soak 5 almonds and 2 dates overnight. Peel the almonds, blend them into a very thin milk with warm water and a pinch of cardamom. This provides Ojas (vitality) in a very small volume.

Your father’s condition is something we see when the body has gone through many years of strain and then a major stomach surgery which has reduced digestion and absorption Right now this is not only a bone issue it is a deeper level of tissue depletion especially of asthi dhatu and majja dhatu along with weak agni so even if he eats good food the body is not able to take full nourishment from it and this leads to weakness pain and poor bone strength One very positive sign is that when he works in the land he feels better this shows his body responds well to natural movement sunlight and a sense of purpose this should be continued in a balanced way without overexertion For his food give very small frequent meals which are warm soft and easy to digest avoid heavy dry and cold food give nourishing but light preparations like thin moong dal with a little ghee soft rice well cooked vegetable soups ragi in small quantity bone broth if he takes it soaked almonds black sesame seeds in small quantity and soft cooked eggs if suitable small fish like sardines can also help Always add a little ghee and mild spices like dry ginger cumin and black pepper to improve digestion because without improving digestion even the best food will not help him For support you can give ashwagandha churna half teaspoon twice daily with warm milk or water laksha guggulu one tablet twice daily after food praval pishti one pinch with honey or ghee once or twice daily and dashamoola kwatha in small dose for body pain and tissue support It is also important to support vitamin D and B12 levels because after stomach surgery these often become low and affect bones and strength His depression is also connected to this level of depletion so along with medicines he needs sunlight gentle activity and emotional support the farm work is actually helping him so encourage it but without strain This kind of condition improves slowly with regular nourishment better digestion and gentle strengthening the body can regain stability reduce pain and improve quality of life

Your father’s condition is mainly due to reduced absorption after stomach surgery + long-term metabolic stress, which is now affecting bones, muscles, and overall strength. The goal is not heavy eating, but high-quality nutrition in small, frequent portions and improving absorption. Diet (very important): Give small meals 4–5 times a day instead of large meals Include: Soft khichdi with ghee Moong dal, well-cooked vegetables Homemade soups (vegetable / bone broth if non-veg) Dates, soaked almonds (in small quantity) Ragi (finger millet) porridge for calcium Add a little ghee in meals — improves nourishment and absorption Avoid: Dry, processed, packaged foods Excess tea/coffee Hydration: Small sips of warm water through the day (not large amounts at once) At home: Warm oil massage (sesame oil) on body 3–4 times/week — helps pain and strengthens tissues Ashwagandha churna – ½ teaspoon with milk (or warm water) at bedtime Shatavari churna – ½ teaspoon once daily Lakshadi Guggulu – 1 tablet twice daily after food These help in improving strength, supporting bones, and recovery. Also, his mental well-being is important — the farm work giving him purpose is actually very beneficial, so encourage that in moderation. Recovery will be gradual, but with consistent nutrition and support, strength can improve. Regards, Dr Raghuveer (Ayurvedacharya)
