Hi Prabhakar,

Can you share if the acidity and gas are worse after specific foods or at certain times of the day? Is your insomnia linked to stress or does it seem to happen even without stress? Do you feel any discomfort, such as chest pain or heaviness, when the acid reflux happens?

In Ayurveda, your symptoms may indicate an imbalance in Vata and Pitta doshas, which can lead to digestive disturbances and sleep issues. I recommend using Triphala for digestion and detoxification, and Shankhapushpi for calming the mind and improving sleep. Amla (Indian gooseberry) and Licorice can help soothe the digestive system and reduce acidity. A warm, nourishing diet with easily digestible foods, along with avoiding heavy meals close to bedtime, can also help. Consider incorporating Pranayama (breathing exercises) and yoga to improve digestion and calm the mind for better sleep.

Your symptoms—long-term insomnia, excessive gas, burping, acid reflux, and bloating—suggest a connection between gut health, stress, and possible digestive enzyme imbalance. Since medicines haven’t helped much, a holistic approach focusing on digestion, relaxation, and natural remedies may work better.

Understanding the root cause of your insomnia and related digestive issues through an Ayurvedic perspective involves examining dosha imbalances in your body. Chronic insomnia could be linked to a Vata imbalance, which affects the nervous system and can aggravate anxiety or restlessness at night. When Vata is disturbed, it leads to irregular digestion, creating bloating, gas, and burping, symptoms indicating also potential Agni (digestive fire) weakness.

Your symptoms suggest the possibility of a Vata-Pitta imbalance as you experience acid reflux and burping along with insomnia. Managing this naturally involves several steps:

Firstly, consider following a strict daily routine. Wake up and go to bed at the same time each day to regulate your body’s internal clock. prioritize calming evening activities like reading or listening to soothing music.

Diet plays a crucial role. Even if you think your diet is good, try eating lighter, easy-to-digest foods in the evening. Soups, cooked veggies and rice can be beneficial. Avoid raw, cold or heavy foods, especially late at night, as these can disturb your doshas.

Consider drinking warm herbal teas. Cumin, coriander, and fennel tea can help balance digestion and reduce gas. Sip on this after dinner.

As for exercise, it’s great you’re staying active, but intense workouts late can further disturb your Vata. Try doing calming yoga poses or a short evening walk instead. Yoga poses like Pavanamuktasana (Wind-Relieving Pose) might alleviate gas.

Experiment with natural supplements. Triphala can gently aid digestion without side effects. Ashwagandha might help calm your mind. However, consult a qualified practitioner before introducing these.

Finally, ensure you create a restful sleep environment, with a comfortable bed, proper ventilation and minimal distractions. If symptoms persist, it’s wise to seek in-person consultation. Balancing doshas requires patience and consistency, but you can definitely make positive changes.
