when to take shatavari in pregnancy - #24445

Joshua

I am really trying to figure out when to take shatavari in pregnancy. I’m currently in my second trimester and just started reading about the benefits of shatavari. My friend, who’s also expecting, swears by it and says it’s great for balancing hormones and even boosting milk production later on. But honestly, I’m kinda confused! I asked my doc, and they didn't seem too informed about Ayurvedic herbs. I’ve been dealing with some ups and downs in my mood, and I just want to ensure I’m taking things at the right time. Like, do I take it all day or just at certain meals? Is there a certain time of day that’s best to take shatavari in pregnancy? I’m worried I might be messing things up if I don’t take it right. Also, should I take it with food, or is water fine? Anyone else feel a bit lost about the timing? Any advice would be super helpful!

In the practice of Ayurveda, Shatavari is often celebrated for its potential to support women during pregnancy, especially in balancing hormones and preparing the body for lactation. Nevertheless, this choice should always consider the individual’s unique prakriti (constitution) and current symptoms. It’s important to approach the use of Shatavari during pregnancy with attention to detail and caution. Based on traditional Ayurveda principles, here’s some guidance on how to incorporate Shatavari safely during your second trimester:

The timing of taking Shatavari can have subtle but significant implications. It is typically best taken after meals, as this will aid in its digestion and assimilation in the body. Since digestion is a central pillar in Ayurveda, ensuring your agni (digestive fire) is nurtured is crucial. Taking Shatavari after meals can help prevent gastrointestinal discomfort, and make it easier for your body to process its compounds.

While the choice of liquid is important, taking Shatavari with warm milk is traditionally recommended. The fat content in milk serves to amplify the herb’s benefits, making it more nurturing and grounding, quite suitable during pregnancy. However, if lactose intolerance is a concern, you might opt for warm almond or oat milk instead, but do ensure these are suited to your dosha type and any other dietary restrictions.

In terms of how often, taking Shatavari once, or twice a day might suffice. Begin with a small dosage, such as half a teaspoon, and observe how your body responds before adjusting. If you notice any discomfort or adverse reactions, it’s crucial to reconsider or seek professional advice.

Mood fluctuations during pregnancy are common and allowing yourself time to adapt to any new supplement, like Shatavari, is wise. Try journaling your experiences after incorporating this herb, which may offer insights into how it specifically affects your mood and energy levels over time.

Above all, always maintain open communication with your healthcare provider. Although Western practitioners might not be extensively trained in Ayurveda, both systems can complement each other when approached thoughtfully. If you’re ever in doubt, seeing an Ayurvedic practitioner who can assess your individual needs more comprehensively might be worthwhile. Staying informed and attentive to your body’s signals is key in ensuring a holistic and harmonious pregnancy experience.
