what is fibroid - #24611

Isabella

I am trying to figure out what is fibroid, because my doctor recently mentioned it after I went in for some pretty heavy bleeding, and honestly, I kinda freaked out. Like, I thought my body was falling apart! I’m 35 and never had major issues, but now I've got these weird cramps that come and go, and the bleeding hasn’t really stopped since. I did some research, and it said fibroids are common, but nobody really explains what is fibroid in a straightforward way. Are they cancerous? Why do they happen? My friend had some terrible experiences with surgery for fibroids, and it’s honestly got me worried about my options. I've been feeling so bloated too. What does this even mean for my everyday life? I don’t want to spend forever in and out of appointments or dealing with pain. If anyone in here has had fibroids, can you please share your experience on what is fibroid and what steps you took? Like, should I be considering Ayurveda or just follow my doctor’s advice? Super confused!

Fibroids, often referred to as uterine fibroids, are non-cancerous growths that develop in or on the uterus. They are quite common, especially in women of childbearing age, so rest assured they are not typically cancerous. Fibroids can vary in size, from tiny seedlings undetectable by the human eye to large masses that can distort and enlarge the uterus. The exact cause isn’t well understood, but it’s believed they’re linked to hormonal imbalances, particularly estrogen and progesterone, as well as genetic factors.

Ayurvedically speaking, fibroids could be seen as an imbalance of the Doshas, where Kapha and Vata may be exacerbated, leading to growths and blockages. Excessive bleeding and cramps, symptoms you mentioned, can also be interpreted as Rakta (blood) imbalance. It’s essential to manage these imbalances, focus on enhancing Agni (digestive fire), and pacify Vata and Kapha. Emphasize a diet rich in easily digestible foods and spices like cumin, coriander and turmeric, which support digestion and reduce bloating.

You might consider introducing hot liquids, like warm water or herbal teas, and avoiding foods that are cold, heavy, or greasy. Engage in regular, gentle exercise—like yoga—as it can improve circulation and help maintain hormonal balance.

Regarding treatment options, Ayurvedic herbs such as Ashoka (Saraca asoca) and Lodhra (Symplocos racemosa) have been traditionally used to manage symptoms like heavy bleeding. It’s always important to consult with an experienced Ayurvedic practitioner before trying herbal remedies, as they can provide personalized advice based on your Prakriti (constitution) and specific symptoms.

However, bear in mind that while Ayurveda offers valuable support, it should be complementing, and not replace, allopathic treatments, especially in severe cases. If your symptoms are significantly affecting your quality of life, it’s wise to closely follow your doctor’s advice and consider the interventions they suggest, including surgery if it’s deemed necessary. Keep an open dialogue with your healthcare providers and make informed decisions.
